Fly Fishing Anglers: The Humorous Side of Angling Personalities | Fly Fishing Insider Podcast and Blog

in Fly Fishing Insider Podcast Blog

You'll find humor in recognizing these familiar personalities by the on the water. I dribble these angler types with a sprinkle of humor reminiscent of legendary comedian Dave Chappelle.

The Novice Experimenters: Your First Fly Fishing Adventure

Meet the Novice Experimenters, likened to those who decide to try cannabis "just once" and suddenly find themselves immersed in a new hobby. These anglers started with a basic fly fishing rod and have quickly amassed an impressive collection of flies and gear. Their journey from casual interest to passionate involvement is a tale many fly fishing beginners can relate to. Now they have rods, a 3-foot bong, and a grinder in their center console.

Angler Personalities

The Philosophical Anglers: Contemplating the Water's Mysteries

Next up are the Philosophical Anglers, those thoughtful souls who spend hours in the water pondering the life cycles of aquatic insects or the ethical considerations of catch and release. Similar to introspective cannabis users, these anglers find deeper meanings in their interactions with nature and the art of fly fishing. Perhaps they are micro-dosing psychedelics. Confusing our simple minds with their deep thoughts and big words.

The Gear-Obsessed Anglers: High-End Fly Fishing Equipment

Then there are the Gear-Obsessed Anglers, who boast the latest and most sophisticated fly fishing equipment. Their high-tech gear is to fly fishing what advanced vaporizers are to cannabis enthusiasts—tools that enhance the experience and performance. This group loves discussing the merits of various fly rods and reels, always searching for the best fly fishing gear to improve their catch rate. They are the backpackers with way too much crap, and 3 Nalgene bottles swinging off of their pack. They often look like they are on a runway at the Outdoor Retailer show.  However, they are often the slowest in the group and catch the least fish.

The Traditionalist Anglers: Keeping Old Techniques Alive

The Traditionalist Anglers are the custodians of fly fishing heritage. They stick to time-tested techniques and hand-tied flies, much like cannabis users who prefer the simplicity and tradition of rolling joints. These anglers appreciate the history and classic methods of fly fishing, often sharing stories of their fly fishing adventures passed down through generations. This is the old dude with the size 10 dry fly on 3x that somehow whacks fish all day and looks at you like you are a fool with all your bullshit.

The Competitive Anglers: The Thrill of Fly Fishing Competitions

Lastly, we have the Competitive Anglers, who approach every fly fishing session with determination to master the sport. They thrive in fly fishing competitions and are constantly improving their techniques to outperform themselves and others. Their spirited approach mirrors that of cannabis enthusiasts who enjoy pushing the boundaries of what they can create or achieve, whether in baking edibles or crafting the perfect joint. They also look at your competitive side and will smoke hit for hit knowing you are about to be crippled with your face on sideways while they walk off and enjoy the rest of their day.

Good news is that any one of these cats will have a little smoke to get you higher than a kite.  Just remember...you never know what that stuff is laced with.  Next thing you dry fly purists will be euro nymphing with mop flies!
