Joe Brooks:
Born Joseph White Brooks in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was an American fly fisherman and a prolific writer during the mid-20th century. His influence on fly fishing remains significant to this day. Brooks wrote for leading fishing and outdoor magazines, including Field and Stream, The Fisherman, and Outdoor Life. His writings expanded the world of fly fishing to many others. In particular he had a profound effect on reading the word about places throughout the world liken Montana, Argentina, Africa, New Zealand and the Caribbean which at the time were not well known and or commonplace in fly fishing.
Now we laugh when people talk about species that can’t be caught by a fly. However, Brooks pioneered fly fishing for species previously considered impossible to catch with a fly. His knack for adventure and early advocacy was unite and that exploratory passion came through in his adventures and writings.
A little known fact about Brooks and his relationship with other predominant anglers is a small story about Lefty Krey. Lefty Kreh, one of the greatest fly fishermen, credits Brooks for introducing him to fly fishing, encouraging his writing, and helping him secure one of his first jobs in the fishing industry. Joe Brooks’s may have passed but his legacy lives on, inspiring anglers to explore the world’s waters with a fly rod. I love his sense of adventure and exploration. It’s something that I personally strive for in my fishing experiences. The unknown has so many parallels with fishing in general. Uncovering secrets, chasing tales, and making memories are all goals.
