In one of our recent episodes, we had the pleasure of hosting Tanner Barbeau, a prominent guide from Colorado. Tanner’s journey in fly fishing is a testament to the transformative allure of the sport. His story is not just about catching different species of fish, but about realizing the essence of the experience, the tranquility of the environment, and the inherent bonding and learning that come with every fishing trip.

A Journey Begins

Tanner’s tryst with fly fishing began at the tender age of 12 during a trip to Colorado. The simplicity and the lack of apparent challenge in the sport didn’t enthrall a young Tanner immediately. However, the seed was planted, and during high school, Tanner did fish a few times on the San Juan River in New Mexico but still didn’t feel the pull towards the sport.

The Turning Point

After high school, Tanner moved to Telluride, Colorado, pursuing a potential career in snowboarding. It was in the subsequent summer that he found himself contemplating his summer activities, leading him back to the gates of fly fishing. A trip to a lake south of Telluride marked a pivotal moment for him. The beauty of catching numerous stunning rainbows entranced him, and he was irreversibly hooked.

Exploring Colorado

Tanner spent considerable time exploring Southwestern Colorado, fishing in the Dolores, the San Miguel, the Gunnison, and many other locales. Eventually, he relocated to Buena Vista, finding solace in the central Colorado location due to its proximity to numerous fishing rivers within the state.

Unique Experiences and Learning Curves

Tanner had the opportunity to experience salmon fishing for the first time in New York at the Douglas salmon camp. Although it was a learning curve, Tanner quickly acclimated to the new fishing technique, catching big Kings and exploring the territories teeming with a variety of fish.

Reflections and Looking Forward

Looking back, Tanner realizes the invaluable experiences and the bonding he had with his father during his initial fishing trips. He understands the significance of those serene moments, catching fish in isolated creeks, and values the mature appreciation he has developed for such experiences.
