On a recent episode, I talked with Jason Klass of Tenkara Talk — a guy with 30-plus years in traditional fly fishing, including guiding and teaching casting, before he found Tenkara.

What Tenkara actually is

Tenkara is a fixed-line method of fly fishing that originated in Japan — no reel, just a long rod, a fixed length of line, and a fly. Jason got into it in 2009 through backpacking: he was already fishing ultralight rods for small streams, and Tenkara was a natural extension of packing light.

The biggest misconception

The idea that Tenkara is somehow "lesser than" conventional fly fishing, or only appropriate for beginners or small creeks, misses the point entirely. As Jason put it on the show, comparing a Tenkara rod to a full conventional setup is like comparing "a BMX bike with bigger tires" — it's a different tool suited to different water, not a simplified version of "real" fly fishing.

Why "beginner mindset" is the real takeaway

The tip we closed on applies far beyond Tenkara: hold onto a beginner's mindset, regardless of how long you've been fishing. It's easy, after a decade of conventional fly fishing, to assume you've seen it all and stop being curious about other methods. Jason's willingness to genuinely learn a new discipline — after already being an expert in another — is what let him find a method that fit his life better than what he'd been doing for years.
