Explore Kenai LLC has guided anglers on Alaska's Kenai and Kasilof Rivers for 9 years. Guide Dallas Voss got into guiding for a job that left the winters free to start a family, and today she runs trips built around a private river lot and an on-site fish processor. Here is what a day looks like.
How does the day start?
Dallas arrives at the private river lot about 30 minutes before clients to prepare the boat: the right tackle and rods, a restocked cooler, seat covers off and the motor started. When you arrive there are restrooms and a place to try on waders and boots. After a quick fishing license check and a safety briefing, it is a short 5-minute run through the canal to the main river channel.
What sets Explore Kenai apart?
Three things, in Dallas's words: the private river lot, where you park free, try on gear and walk straight to the boat without navigating a public launch; the on-site fish processor, which saves you a drive to a third party with your catch; and being one of the few female guides in the area, which helps women feel at ease booking a charter.
What happens at the end of the day?
Back at the river property, Dallas cleans and fillets your fish and points you to the on-site processor. Then she cleans the boat, rehangs the waders and boots and fuels up for the next trip.
What should you bring?
Your fishing license and your own food and drinks. Waders, boots, rods and all tackle are provided, so there is less to pack for a long flight to Alaska.
Who is it for?
Women and first-timers especially, and anyone who wants a simple, well-run day on the Kenai. All trout are catch and release, with safe handling practiced as much as possible.
