Where to Go Fly Fishing
The best fly fishing destination for you depends on what you can already cast. Louisiana and Belize are where trout anglers should learn saltwater. Arkansas, North Carolina and Pennsylvania are affordable domestic trout weeks you can drive to. Alaska and Montana are fresh water on a schedule. The Florida Keys and Ascension Bay reward anglers who already cast well under pressure, and Tierra del Fuego is the hardest week on this list.

How do you choose a fly fishing destination?
Choose by the cast you can make today, not the one you are working toward. Nearly every disappointing saltwater trip comes from an angler booking clear-water permit or tarpon flats before they can put a fly 50 feet into wind in under three false casts. Murky water and many shots (Louisiana, the Belize back flats) forgive a developing cast. Clear water and one shot per fish does not.
After that, the order is season, then regulations, then cost. Season decides whether the fish are even there. Regulations decide what your week actually looks like: a weekend float closure or a catch-and-release section can rearrange an entire itinerary. Cost comes last because the difference between a $900 guided day and a $14,950 week is mostly lodging, flights and fly-outs, not better fishing.

The easiest place in the Caribbean to go from trout angler to saltwater angler. You can wade flats straight off the beach, bonefish are there every month of the year, and everything is catch-and-release by law. Start here if you have never cast at a fish you can see.
The cheapest, closest saltwater education in the country. The water is murky enough to forgive an imperfect cast and you get a dozen shots at each fish instead of one. Learn here before you spend real money on clear Caribbean flats.
The best-value trout week in America, and a fishery where the dam schedule matters more than the hatch chart. Bull Shoals has eight generators; run them all and the river rises eight feet. Learn to read the releases and you have thousands of rainbows and a real shot at a very large brown.
Southern Appalachian water where the rules change at a creek mouth: the Davidson is catch-and-release above Avery Creek and hatchery-supported below it. Native brook trout at 5,000 feet, and a French Broad musky fishery that runs cool enough to fish year-round.
Spring Creek, Penns Creek, the Little Juniata and the Letort. Cold alkaline spring water, wild brown trout at roughly three thousand fish per mile, and the place American euro nymphing actually took hold. The most technical trout water in the eastern United States.
Classic freestone dry-fly water holding the last river-dwelling Arctic grayling population in the lower 48. Two regulations (the Dickie Bridge catch-and-release section and the nonresident weekend float closures) will reshape your week if nobody tells you about them.
Five species of salmon on a schedule you can plan a year around, then trophy rainbows eating flesh and eggs behind them in October. The most productive fly fishing region in North America, and the one where run timing matters more than skill.
Three species, three sets of rules, and a 90-minute drive from Miami. This is a casting test more than a fishing trip; a fast 40 to 55 foot cast into wind is the whole game. Go when you can already make that cast.
Roosterfish inside a quarter mile of the beach, reserved by Mexican law exclusively for sport anglers. A rooster eats at twice your retrieve speed and charges fifteen feet toward you before you come tight. Nothing in fresh water prepares you for it.
The best sea-run brown trout fishery on earth, with a season fixed in law from November 1 to April 19 and mandatory catch-and-release. It is also relentless: sunk lines, severe wind, and long hours for a handful of very large fish. Not everyone enjoys it.
When is the best time of year to go fly fishing?
There is no single best month, because the calendar splits by hemisphere and by species. January through March is peak sea-run brown trout season in Tierra del Fuego while most of North America is frozen. June and July are king and sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay and salmonflies on the Big Hole. May through September is the grand-slam window across the Florida Keys, Belize and Ascension Bay. September through January is the redfish push in the Louisiana marsh.
If you can only travel once a year, pick the destination first and then take its peak week. Booking a marginal week at a great fishery is a more common mistake than booking a peak week at a mediocre one.
How much does a fly fishing trip actually cost?
A guided day close to home starts from $375. A three- or four-day package with lodging starts from $2,300 per angler. A full week at a destination lodge with fly-outs, private transfers and gear included starts from $12,950. Licences, permits and reserve fees are small by comparison but are almost always the thing people forget: a king salmon stamp, a Sian Ka'an entry fee, an Argentine preferential-zone surcharge.
The expensive part of a destination week is rarely the fishing. It is the aircraft, the boats, the staff and the remoteness. That is worth paying for when the fishery genuinely requires it, and not worth paying for when a $900 day out of a truck puts you on the same species.
Do you need a lodge, or just a guide?
Take a guide when you can drive or fly commercially to the water and sleep somewhere ordinary: the Keys, Montana, the Louisiana marsh. Take a lodge when the fishing is somewhere you cannot reach on your own: Bristol Bay fly-outs, Tierra del Fuego beats, a Caribbean flat that needs a skiff and local knowledge to find. The lodge is buying you access, not skill.
