Fly Fishing Belize: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips

Fly Fishing Belize: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips

Belize is the most forgiving place in the Caribbean to start flats fishing. Bonefish and permit are catchable year-round, migratory tarpon run late April through August, and all three are catch-and-release only by law. Most anglers base on Ambergris Caye, a 20-minute flight from Belize City, and wade flats straight off the beach.

I'm a trout guy who made the jump to saltwater, and I tell anyone who asks that Belize is the right second step. Four species worth chasing (bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook), all sight fishing, all with their own personality. And unlike most Caribbean destinations, a good chunk of the fishing on Ambergris Caye starts at the end of the dock.

This page is the Belize map: where to fish, when each species shows up, the lodge we certify and the lodges Frontiers books, plus the tips our Belize guests have shared on the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast. For the deep version of the island, read our Ambergris Caye destination guide.

A first-hand note. I've stayed with Chris and Mary Alice at the Iguana House, and the advice they gave me (and repeated on the episode we published April 22, 2024) is the best Belize advice I know: spend your first hours fishing off the dock, before you ever step into a panga. Not because the dock is better water, but because there's no guide standing behind you counting false casts. You find out what your cast does in the wind, the pressure comes off, and the guided days that follow get a lot more productive.

Where to Fly Fish in Belize

  • Ambergris Caye shoreline flats: Belize's largest island runs north from San Pedro along the inside of the barrier reef. Turtle grass, sand holes and mangrove edges between the beach and the reef are all fishable, and you reach the northern flats by golf cart.
  • The reef channels: the water between the island and the Belize Barrier Reef is where permit move through. That's panga water, and it's where a guide earns the fee.
  • Tranquility Bay: one of the wadeable shoreline stretches worth walking when bonefish are in. Expect singles and small groups of three or four, not big schools.
  • Mangrove edges: snook hold here and turn up as a bonus rather than a plan, along with resident tarpon.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Belize

The short answer is March through August, with the grand-slam window peaking May through July. Bonefish are there every month and permit are catchable year-round, so there's no truly bad month. The migratory tarpon run, mature ocean fish from 60 to over 100 pounds, is the one element with a real calendar, and it's what makes summer special.

Target JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC

Migratory tarpon

Intensity:LightModerateHeavy

January and February carry the highest chance of a cold front (locals call it a Norther) that flattens the fishing for a few days, and hurricane season overlaps the back half of the tarpon run. That second one is a travel-insurance conversation rather than a fishing one.

Belize Tips from Podcast Guests

  • Pack an emergency layer for sudden weather shifts
You can be on a boat in 85-degree sun and be cold an hour later when a front comes through. A light shell earns its space in the bag.
Lance Kittel, traveling angler who fishes Belize and Argentina, on Belize, Argentina, etc, Why They Don't Have to be Once In A Lifetime
  • Hold a 90-degree angle to control a running fish
Keep the rod at a right angle to the fish so the bend does the work. It's the difference between turning a bonefish and watching it run you into the mangroves.
Karin Miller, saltwater guide and tenkara angler
  • Build leaders by diameter, not just pound-test
Tippet ratings vary a lot between brands. Matching diameters keeps the leader turning over a crab pattern into the wind on a permit flat.

Belize Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

When is the best time to fly fish Belize?

March through August is the prime window for fly fishing in Belize, with the grand-slam window (bonefish, permit and tarpon in one day) peaking May through July. Bonefish and permit are catchable year-round on Ambergris Caye, but migratory tarpon are mostly a late April through August fish. January and February bring the most cold fronts.

How much does a Belize fly fishing trip cost?

El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye, booked through Frontiers International Travel, starts from $2,556 per angler, which makes Belize one of the most accessible saltwater lodge trips. The domestic flight from Belize City to San Pedro is about 20 minutes, and a 1.5-hour water taxi is the cheaper alternative. Budget separately for a Belize sport fishing licence and gratuities.

Can you keep bonefish, permit or tarpon in Belize?

No. Since 2009, Belize law has made it illegal to possess bonefish, permit or tarpon except in the act of catch and release, under the Fisheries (Species Designation Protection) Regulations. That protection is a big reason the Belize flats still fish the way they do. Every one of those fish goes back.

Is Belize good for a first saltwater fly fishing trip?

Yes. Belize bonefish are there every month, and Ambergris Caye lets you wade shoreline flats and fish off a dock between guided panga days, which takes the pressure off a developing cast. Permit are the hard part and can wait for a second trip. Many anglers learn the wind and power on Louisiana redfish first, then go to Belize for clear water.

Do you need a fishing licence in Belize?

Yes. Anglers fly fishing in Belize need a sport fishing licence issued by the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI), applied for through its online portal. The one-year licence is for Belize residents, so visitors take a short-term licence. Ask your lodge whether it arranges the licence for you before you arrive.

What is the biggest permit mistake in Belize?

Casting at the wake. James Johnson told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast that on a big permit the V-wake sits roughly two feet behind the head, so a fly dropped on the wake lands on the fish's back and spooks it. Lead the fish, let a crab pattern fall without twitching it, and keep everything calm.
