Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements for Your Fishing Trip
Trip Prep: What to Confirm Yourself
Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements for Your Fishing Trip
Before you book anything, check two things: your passport should be valid for at least six months past your return date, and your destination may require a visa or an electronic travel authorization (UK ETA, NZeTA, Australia ETA) bought online before you fly. Routine U.S. passport processing currently takes 4-6 weeks, so start early.
How long does my passport need to be valid?
The U.S. Department of State advises that your passport be valid for at least six months after your travel dates. Some countries only require validity for the length of your stay (Belize and the Bahamas, for example), but airlines can deny boarding when a passport is close to expiring, and the six-month rule keeps you clear of that. Also check for blank pages; the Bahamas asks for two.
How long does a U.S. passport take right now?
Per the State Department, routine processing is 4-6 weeks and expedited service is 2-3 weeks for an extra $60, plus mailing time of up to two weeks each way. If you qualify (age 25 or older, a 10-year passport expiring within a year or expired less than five years, in the U.S., and no travel for six weeks), you can renew online, but online renewals cannot be expedited and your old passport is cancelled when you apply. Do not apply online inside six weeks of a trip.
