Fishing Licenses and Park or Marine Reserve Fees

Trip Prep: What to Confirm Yourself

Fishing Licenses and Park or Marine Reserve Fees

Almost every fishing destination requires a license, and many flats, rivers and parks add a separate reserve or permit fee on top. Lodges sometimes buy these for you and sometimes leave it to you, so ask. In the U.S., state licenses are not valid inside Yellowstone, which sells its own park permit.

Who sells the license, and what does it cost?

Destination License or fee Notes (Oct 2026)

British Columbia Non-resident alien freshwater license + classified waters licence Annual CAD $91.44, 8-day $57.14, 1-day $22.86. Classified waters add $45.72 (Class I) or $22.86 (Class II) per day.
New Zealand Fish & Game licence Required for trout and salmon; felt-soled waders are banned.

Does the lodge buy my license for me?

Sometimes. Many remote lodges handle it at check-in and add it to your bill; others expect you to arrive with it already printed. It is a five-minute fix at home and an expensive headache on the water, so get the answer in writing.

What are park and marine reserve fees?

Protected waters such as marine reserves, biosphere reserves and national parks often charge a daily or per-visit entry fee that is completely separate from the fishing license. These fees fund the enforcement and conservation that keep the fishing good, which is exactly why the best water tends to have them.

Questions to Ask Your Frontiers Specialist

  • Is my fishing license included, and if not, do I buy it before I arrive or at the lodge?
  • Will we fish inside any national park, marine reserve or classified water that charges its own fee?
  • Are those fees paid in cash locally, and in which currency?
