What Does a Fly Fishing Lodge Rate Include?
Trip Prep: What to Confirm Yourself
What Does a Fly Fishing Lodge Rate Include?
A fly fishing lodge rate almost never means the same thing twice. One lodge includes guided days, meals, an open bar and airport transfers; the next charges separately for alcohol, the guide's boat, flies, or the charter flight in. Get the inclusions in writing for your exact lodge and week before you compare prices.
What is usually included in a lodge rate?
At most full-service fishing lodges the package covers lodging, three meals a day, and a set number of guided fishing days, typically with two anglers sharing a guide and boat. Many also include soft drinks, house wine or beer with dinner, and transfers from the nearest airstrip. That is the pattern, not a promise; every line below varies lodge to lodge.
What is often extra?
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Arrival and departure days | Is a "7-night" package 6 fishing days or 5? Arrival afternoons and departure mornings are rarely fished. |
| Guide ratio | Is it 2 anglers per guide, or is a private guide an upcharge? |
| Drinks | Open bar, house wine only, or everything billed to your room? |
| Transfers and charter flights | Bush planes, floatplanes and boat transfers to remote lodges are often priced separately. |
| Flies, leaders and tippet | Some lodges sell flies by the dozen in the shop and expect you to replace what you lose. |
| Licenses and park fees | Frequently excluded. See Fishing Licenses and Park or Marine Reserve Fees. |
| Gratuities | Almost never included. See How Much to Tip. |
| Single supplement | Traveling solo usually adds a charge for a private room and sometimes a private guide. |
| Laundry, Wi-Fi, gear rental | Small items that add up over a week. |
Why does it matter so much?
Two lodges with very different headline rates can land much closer together once drinks, transfers and flies are added. Compare the all-in number, not the headline rate. And because deposits are often non-refundable, protect the trip: Frontiers International Travel recommends travel protection for U.S. travelers (see Travel Protection Through Frontiers), and Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States.
