Fly Fishing Chile: Patagonia Rivers, Lakes, Seasons and Tips

Chile fly fishing means wild-living brown and rainbow trout in Patagonia, built around three trips: the Aysén Region out of Coyhaique, the Futaleufú and Lago Yelcho country in Los Lagos, and the Chilean side of Tierra del Fuego. Most seasons run October or November to early May, and every visiting angler needs a SERNAPESCA license.

Chile is a long, skinny country, and the trout fishing lives in the southern half: big glacial lakes, the rivers that drain them, and spring creeks and freestones running through ranch country. Trout and salmon are not native here. Brown, rainbow and brook trout and several salmon species have lived wild in these rivers for generations.

This page is the Chile map: where to fish, the official season dates for 2026-2027, the license and entry rules, and what our podcast guests have said about fishing Chile. For the country next door, see our Argentina location page.

The Chile story in our archive comes from Bert Ley, Vice President of the Utah Stream Access Coalition, on episode 127 of the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast, published July 20, 2021. Bert had been to Chilean Patagonia three times, every time through the same outfit, which ran one lodge on Lago Yelcho and another on Lago Rosselot. What brought him back was the setup: each lodge sat on a lake right where a river drains out, so he could fish the lake one day and the river the next. His favorite memory was drifting a cliff line in a motor launch with the engine off, the guide working the oars, casting dries and sometimes streamers tight to fallen trees and watching trout come out from under the logs in crystal-clear water to slam the fly. On another trip he and a buddy rented a truck in Coyhaique, hired a guide for one local river and explored small streams on their own. His rod advice for Chile: a 6 or 7-weight serves you better than a 5, because you need distance and you are throwing big, fuzzy flies.

Where to Fly Fish in Chile

Most Chile fly fishing trips are built around one of three regions. Season dates are set region by region.

Aysén Region

The Aysén Region is the heart of Chilean Patagonia trout fishing, and Coyhaique, the regional capital, is the natural base. Coyhaique sits where the Simpson and Coyhaique rivers meet, and the Simpson runs west toward Puerto Aysén through the Río Simpson National Reserve. Balmaceda Airport is about 55 km southeast of town. Farther south, the Baker River flows out of Lago Bertrand and is described as Chile's largest river by volume. To the north, Lago Rosselot drains into the Palena system at La Junta, the lake Bert Ley fished from a lodge at its outlet.

SERNAPESCA sets three periods for Aysén. On rivers, the 2026-2027 season opened October 12 as catch and release only until November 30; from December 1 to February 28, 2027 anglers may keep up to three fish or 15 kilos a day, whichever comes first; and release is mandatory again from March 1 to May 6, 2027. Lakes follow the same pattern with different dates: release only to November 9, a three-fish limit from November 10 to April 1, 2027, then release only to May 6. Chinook salmon are open October 12 to January 15, 2027, with a two-fish limit.

Futaleufú and Lago Yelcho

The Futaleufú River starts in Los Alerces National Park in Argentina, crosses into Chile's Palena Province in the Los Lagos Region, and ends after about 105 km in Lago Yelcho. The Yelcho River then drains the lake northwest to the sea near Chaitén. The river, its tributaries and its lakes are fly fishing destinations, and several lodges sit on the Yelcho shoreline, Bert Ley's other base among them.

Los Lagos opened its full 2026-2027 season on November 13, 2026, with a limit of three fish or 15 kilos a day on most waters. An early catch-and-release opening on September 4 covered only named waters such as Llanquihue, Rupanco and Puyehue lakes and the Puelo and Manso rivers, so check the list before you fish anything in September or October.

Chilean Tierra del Fuego

The Río Grande rises in the Chilean, western part of Tierra del Fuego; roughly 140 of its 240 km run through Chile before it crosses into Argentina and reaches the sea at the city of Río Grande. In the Timaukel commune, SERNAPESCA makes the Grande, Blanco and García rivers and lakes Deseado and Despreciado catch and release only for every salmonid, with single, barbless hooks. Magallanes opened its 2026-2027 season on October 16 and closes April 14, 2027, and Lago Fagnano is open all year. For the famous sea-run browns on the lower river, read Fly Fishing the Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Chile

Chile's trout seasons run on the southern hemisphere calendar. SERNAPESCA's national default runs from the second Friday of November to the first Sunday of May, and Aysén and Magallanes open earlier by regional rule. Shading below shows when each fishery is open in 2026-2027 and when catch and release is mandatory; it is not hatch data.

Fishery JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC
Aysén rivers
Aysén lakes
Los Lagos, incl. Futaleufú
Magallanes, incl. Tierra del Fuego

Blank cells mean closed. Timaukel waters in Tierra del Fuego are catch and release all season, and Lago Fagnano is open all year.

Chile Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

Do you need a fishing license to fly fish in Chile?

Yes. Every foreign visitor needs a SERNAPESCA recreational fishing license, bought online at pescarecreativa.sernapesca.cl or at a SERNAPESCA office, and carried with your passport. The under-12 and over-65 exemptions apply only to Chileans and residents. For 2026, the foreigner license covering fresh and salt water costs 19,900 Chilean pesos for a week, 39,800 for a month and 59,600 for a year.

When is the best time to fly fish Chilean Patagonia?

December through March is the Patagonian summer and the core of the Chile trout season. Aysén opens October 12 with catch and release only, Magallanes opens October 16, and most of Los Lagos, including the Futaleufú, opens the second Friday of November. Seasons close between April 14 in Magallanes and early May elsewhere.

Chile or Argentina for a Patagonia trout trip?

Chilean Patagonia sits on the wetter Pacific side of the Andes, with big lakes and forested rivers; Argentine Patagonia is drier steppe on the Atlantic side. Many anglers fish both, and the Futaleufú starts in Argentina before it flows into Chile. In our bucket list ranking, Chile is the cheaper cousin to an Argentina trip. Compare both on our Argentina page.

Can you fly fish Chile without a guide?

Yes, with a license and the regional rules in hand. Bert Ley rented a truck in Coyhaique, hired a guide for one river and fished small streams on his own, and he found ranch owners generally welcoming. Ask before crossing private land. Chile requires artificial lures and one rod per angler, and SERNAPESCA asks anglers to clean and dry gear between waters to stop the spread of Didymo.

What fly rod should I bring to Chile?

A 9-foot 6-weight or 7-weight covers most Chile trout fishing. Bert Ley told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast a 6 or 7 serves you better than a 5-weight, because you need distance and you will be casting big dries and streamers. Pack a floating line plus a sink tip or sinking line for lake outlets, and a spare rod in your carry-on.
