Fly Fishing Argentina: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips
Argentina fly fishing runs November through April, the southern-hemisphere season. Northern Patagonia around San Martín and Junín de los Andes fishes best in November, December, March and April; Tierra del Fuego's Río Grande sea-run browns peak January to mid-March; and golden dorado follow falling water on the Paraná. Fly into Buenos Aires first.
Argentina is not one fly fishing destination. It is at least four: the small, clear trout rivers of northern Patagonia, the meandering spring-creek water around Esquel and Trevelin, the sea-run brown trout of Tierra del Fuego, and golden dorado in the flooded river systems of the north. Each one has its own months, its own flies and its own way of getting there, and the most expensive mistake is treating them as one trip.
This page is the Argentina map: where each fishery sits, when it fishes, what the permits look like, the lodge Frontiers books on the Río Grande, and what our Argentina guests have shared on the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast. For the sea-run brown trout deep dive, read our Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego guide.
Most of what follows comes from Evan Jones, who spent two years travelling and fishing Argentine Patagonia, writes for the Orvis blog and co-wrote The Trout Bum's Guide to Argentina. On the episode we published October 24, 2023, he broke the country down region by region, and two of his observations have stuck with me more than anything I have read about Patagonia. First, the flies get bigger, not smaller. On a December spring creek, going smaller and more technical, the way he had learned to fish in Colorado, simply failed; a size 6 Chernobyl Ant slapped down hard pulled fish from several feet away. Second, the bugs are local and specific. In late January and early February a bright green inchworm drops from the willows and trout over 20 inches feed on it tight to the bank, and in March a tree-dwelling insect hatches that the fish will only take on a small, all-black pattern. You figure that one out, he said, from the red stain in a fish's mouth.

Where to Fly Fish in Argentina
- Northern Patagonia, Neuquén: San Martín de los Andes, Junín de los Andes and the Aluminé area: small, clear, stony rivers close enough together to fish two in a day, with heavy insect life. Evan Jones compared it to the American West of fifty to a hundred years ago. Best in November, December, March and April.
- Central Patagonia, Bariloche to Esquel and Trevelin: more meandering cut-bank and spring-creek water, often tannic. Fewer fish, bigger fish, and a game of streamers and big terrestrials cast long from well back off the bank. Glacier-fed water near Esquel stays cold through January and February, which makes it the midsummer pick.
- Tierra del Fuego, Río Grande: the world's best-known sea-run brown trout fishery: season November 1 to April 19 on the Río Grande, catch-and-release only, with mandatory angler registration. It is sink-tip swinging in serious wind. Full details in our Río Grande guide.
- Santa Cruz River, southern Patagonia: a steelhead run that Evan Jones rated more exciting than the sea-run browns, with more public water. He found it peaking late March to early April, when Río Grande guides head there after their own season closes.
- Paraná River, golden dorado: Lance Kittel fished a mothership trip here in January 2024: a river cruiser that tows skiffs and repositions overnight to follow falling floodwater, which pulls bait out of the wetlands. Four anglers landed more than 200 golden dorado in six days.
When to Go Fly Fishing in Argentina
November through April, with the right month depending on the region. Neuquén's 2026-2027 season opens November 1, and some lakes and rivers close May 1, 2027. In January much of Buenos Aires goes on holiday, so northern rivers get warmer, lower and busier; that is when Esquel's cold water or the Río Grande makes more sense. No agency publishes a hatch chart for Patagonia, so the trout rows below come from Evan Jones's region-by-region account and the Río Grande row from the Tierra del Fuego season rules and lodge run timing.

November can bring days of sideways rain in the north, though lake outlets stay clear. The second half of April surprised Evan Jones with how pleasant it was, and it is when migratory lake browns run near Bariloche.

Argentina Tips from Podcast Guests
-
Slim your travel packing to two outfits and simple leaders
Pack two rotating outfits and one or two leader setups; for golden dorado, 30 to 40-pound mono plus a bite tippet.
Lance Kittel, traveling angler who fishes Belize and Argentina -
Pack an emergency layer for sudden weather shifts
Carry an insulating layer, hat and gloves however warm the forecast looks, and check carry-on rules for rods both into and out of Argentina.
Lance Kittel, on Belize, Argentina, etc, Why They Don't Have to be Once In A Lifetime -
Pre-rig every rod before you start fishing
Rig every rod before you leave the ramp so a moving fish never waits on a knot.
Evan Jones, outdoor writer, on Fly Fishing and Traveling Patagonia and Argentina -
Always retrieve flies away from the fish, never toward it
Strip baitfish patterns away from a predator's head; prey does not swim at the thing that eats it. It holds for golden dorado too.
Evan Jones, outdoor writer, on Fly Fishing and Traveling Patagonia and Argentina -
Pack a multi-piece travel rod instead of checking a second bag
A stiff six or seven piece rod fits inside your main luggage, so the rod tube is not an extra checked bag on regional flights.

Argentina Fly Fishing Questions, Answered
When is the best time to fly fish Argentina?
November through April. In northern Patagonia, around San Martín and Junín de los Andes, November, December, March and April are the best months, because January brings holiday crowds and warmer, lower rivers. Esquel's glacier-fed water holds up through January and February, and the Río Grande sea-run brown trout peak from January to mid-March.
How much does an Argentina fly fishing trip cost?
It ranges widely by region. Kau Tapen Lodge on the Río Grande, booked through Frontiers International Travel, starts from $12,950 per angler for a week. Permits are provincial and priced in pesos: Neuquén's 2026-2027 nonresident permit is listed at ARS 140,000 for ten days, and Tierra del Fuego adds a Río Grande surcharge on top of its base permit.
Do you need a fishing licence in Argentina?
Yes, and it is issued by the province, not the country. Neuquén sells permits online and non-resident foreigners buy with a passport. Tierra del Fuego requires a provincial permit and mandatory registration in its access system before fishing authorised accesses. Some national parks have their own rules, so confirm with your lodge which permit covers your water.
Should you drive yourself around Patagonia?
For most visitors, no. Evan Jones, who spent two years fishing Argentina, advised against driving south of Esquel, citing roads without a center line, scarce fuel stations and livestock on the road, and suggested flying between regions and booking a package instead. Gear is also expensive to replace in Argentina, so bring spares.
Northern Patagonia or Tierra del Fuego: which Argentina trip is right for me?
Choose northern Patagonia if you love reading water and changing flies: small clear rivers, lots of insects and dry-fly fishing for browns and rainbows. Choose Tierra del Fuego if you want a shot at the largest brown trout of your life and are happy swinging sink tips in strong wind all week. Evan Jones found the Río Grande the less engaging of the two.
Book the season you actually want
