Assume you'll barely fish, and never let it show. You'll be rigging, re-tying, applying sunscreen, and managing snacks. Visible adult frustration is the single fastest way to end a kid's interest in fishing — and heat shortens everyone's fuse, yours included. Plan to be crew, not an angler, and the day gets much easier.
The Lesson
On a trout river you manage the fishing. In the tropics with kids you manage the conditions, and the fishing takes care of itself.
That's a real reframe, because it changes what you pack and how you plan the day. Sun exposure isn't a comfort issue for a kid, it's the hard limit on how long they can be out. Same with heat, and same with hydration. Every one of those is solvable in advance, and none of them is solvable at eleven in the morning on a flat.
The good news is that the fix is cheap and boring. Cover up, start early, break in shade, drink more than feels necessary. Do all four and a kid who would have lasted ninety minutes lasts most of a day.

Ask what the best moment was before you ask how many. On a big trip the temptation to tally is strong, and kids read your first question as the scoreboard. Researchers who mapped what kids call fun found trying hard and good sportsmanship near the top and winning much further down than adults assume. Make the ride back about the stingray they saw, not the count.
On the Water Together
How to structure a tropical day around a kid:
- Be on the water at first light. The best two hours are also the coolest two hours. That is a gift; take it.
- Cover skin, not just apply lotion. Long sleeves, a brim, a buff. Reapplying sunscreen on a squirming kid every ninety minutes is a losing battle.
- Build in a shade break before they need it. Back to the dock, under a mangrove, into the cabin. Scheduled, not reactive.
- Call it at midday. Come back in the evening if everyone's game. Pushing through the middle of the day is how a trip of a lifetime becomes a memory of being hot.

Show them the care, don't lecture it. Wet your hands before you touch a fish, keep it in the water, pick up someone else's line off the flat. Adults who grew up to care about wild places overwhelmingly point back to a grown-up who modeled that care rather than explained it. In a place this beautiful, what you do in front of them is the entire lesson.
