Doug Swisher, along with his partner Carl Richards, significantly impacted the world of fly fishing. Their groundbreaking work continues to shape the sport today.

Selective Trout

In 1971 Swisher and Richards turned the angling world upside down with the publication of Selective Trout.

A friend gave me this book and it was a game-changer for me. The illustrations from Dave Whitlock and the writing of Swisher and Richards kept me up at night dreaming of my next outing.

The book married the science of aquatic entomology to the art of fly fishing, providing practical insight into trout behaviour, feeding patterns, and effective fly patterns. Swisher and Richards promoted ideas that were genuinely radical at the time: no-hackle flies, keeping the body in the film, barbless hooks, and catch-and-release.

Their work revolutionised how anglers approached trout fishing, emphasising a deeper understanding of insect life cycles and natural presentation. That idea — that observation beats fly choice — is the same principle behind the OSSCP fly selection formula I use today.

The Madam X

Swisher invented the highly adaptable Madam X in 1980 on the Bitterroot River, his home water in Montana. Its genius is that one pattern covers several jobs:

Tied small, it resembles a stonefly.
Darkened, it mimics a cricket.
Tied larger, it becomes an effective hopper pattern — the most popular version.
Modified as a parachute, it serves as a pure attractor.
