Revolutionaries in Fly Fishing: George Daniel

George Daniel Fly Fishing

George Daniel is a distinguished figure in fly fishing, known for his influence on American angling and his role as an educator and mentor.

Who he is

He began fly fishing at a very young age in Potter County, Pennsylvania, where he had the opportunity to practise on a native brook trout fishery reserved for children. That deep engagement from such a young age paved the way for him to become a two-time US National Fly Fishing Champion and to earn significant recognition internationally.

Education and mentoring

George's passion extends beyond fishing itself to teaching. He lectures and runs seminars at clubs and fly fishing shows nationwide, and has coached and mentored the USA Youth Fly Fishing Team.

His book Fly Fishing Evolution: Advanced Strategies for Dry Fly, Nymph, and Streamer Fishing showcases techniques he's refined over the years, helping anglers adapt to varied conditions. He's also published several of my favourites, including Dynamic Nymphing and Strip Set.

George the professor

At Penn State University, George teaches an advanced fly fishing course with hands-on instruction during guided trips. Students learn the technical side — knot tying, fish behaviour — and develop their ability to spot fish effectively.

Through his teaching he emphasises helping others excel, which ensures his influence reaches generations of anglers he'll never meet. That commitment to education is what keeps the sport evolving.

I'm a huge fan of George Daniel and the way he teaches. When I first started, I witnessed a shop session on euro-style nymphing that changed how I understood and fished water. I've put together a playlist of his videos so you don't have to do the research yourself.

Putting his nymphing into practice

George's work is largely why euro and modern nymphing spread in the US. If that's what you took from this, my article on understanding nymphing and wet flies covers the techniques, and my conversation with Lance Egan gets into the competitive side of it.

Modern nymphing needs a longer, lighter rod for line control — the JHFLYCO Euro Nymph Combo 9'0" 4WT, the Wild Water Euro Nymphing Kit 3wt 10ft, or the 23PS Nymph Combo. For flies, the Basics Bead Head Nymph Assortment and Bead Head Pheasant Tail Assortment.
