10 Tenkara Gifts for Simple, Small-Stream Fly Fishing

Wasatch Tenkara Rods Hankyu Middle Fork triple zoom tenkara rod

The best tenkara gifts are a complete starter kit, a forgiving telescoping rod like the DRAGONtail Shadowfire 365 or Wasatch Hankyu Middle Fork, a box of kebari flies, a tapered tenkara line, a tiny strap pack and a light Rising Brookie Net. Tenkara is fixed-line fly fishing with no reel, so small, simple gifts fit it perfectly.

Tenkara is the Japanese style of fly fishing where the line ties straight to the tip of a long telescoping rod. No reel, no guides, no vest full of gadgets. I love it on the kind of skinny, brushy creek where a 9 foot rod and a full fly line feel like bringing a canoe to a bathtub.

That simplicity also makes tenkara one of the easiest things to shop for. Most of these gifts come from the FFIP tenkara collection, and almost none of them involve guessing a size.

What Is Tenkara, and Who Is a Tenkara Gift For?

Tenkara is a fixed-line method of fly fishing from Japan: a telescoping rod, usually 9 to 13 feet long, a line tied to the rod tip, tippet and a fly. A tenkara gift is a great fit for a small-stream trout angler, a backpacker who wants a light rod, a kid or partner who is curious about fly fishing, or an experienced angler looking for a new challenge.

On episode 246 of the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast, tenkara angler Jason Klass pushed back on the idea that tenkara is only for beginners or kids. He described it as a self-imposed challenge that many experienced anglers take on for a more direct connection to the water. We wrote up the full conversation in All About Tenkara: Misconceptions, Gear, and the Beginner's Mindset.

What Are the Best Tenkara Gifts Under $50?

The best tenkara gifts under $50 are the accessories that complete a rod: a kit, a line, flies and a small pack. These four are safe for anyone who already owns a tenkara rod, or as the second half of a rod gift.

Keep a stripped-down kit ready to go. A founder of a tenkara-focused fly fishing education website told us that tenkara is not a cult you have to join; it is another tool. On days when he does not want to deal with a bag, he grabs his tenkara rod, drops a spool of tippet and a small fly box in his pocket, and goes. That is exactly why a strap pack and a slim box of kebari make such good gifts: they turn a free hour into a fishing hour.

Which Tenkara Rod Should You Buy as a Gift?

For a gift, buy a soft or medium-soft tenkara rod in the 11 to 12 foot range, or a zoom rod that covers several lengths. Softer, easier-casting tenkara rods suit beginners best, a point Jason Klass made on the show. Unlike a standard fly rod, a tenkara rod has no line weight or reel to match, so a rod gift is far less risky here than it is in regular fly fishing.

What Else Does a Tenkara Angler Want?

Beyond the rod and line, a tenkara angler wants a small net, something good to read and a hat that keeps glare down. My buddy Tanner fishes tenkara on Utah creeks most of the summer, and his whole wish list fits in one stocking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tenkara a good gift for a beginner?

Yes, tenkara is a great gift for a beginner because there is no reel or fly line to match, and the basic cast is simple to learn. A soft rod like the DRAGONtail Shadowfire 365 plus the Tenkara USA Tenkara Kit covers everything they need except a fishing license.

Do experienced fly anglers like tenkara gifts?

Many do. Experienced anglers often use tenkara on small streams or as a light second rod for hiking. A zoom rod like the Wasatch Hankyu Middle Fork or a pack rod like the DRAGONtail Kaida zx320 is a good fit for someone who already fishes a standard fly rod.

What length tenkara rod should I buy?

For most small to medium trout streams, an 11 to 12 foot tenkara rod is the classic choice. Zoom rods that adjust between lengths, such as 9, 10.5 and 12 feet, make the gift safer if you do not know their home water.

What flies do you use for tenkara?

Tenkara anglers traditionally use kebari, simple Japanese wet flies, often with a reverse hackle. A box like the 12 Tenkara Flies in Box gives them four proven kebari patterns to start.

Tight lines, everyone!

Simple gear, small water and a whole lot of fun: tenkara helps anglers catch any fish, any time, and anywhere.
