The first time most river anglers push a boat onto a lake, they do the thing that has always worked: they tie on a fly they trust, cast it somewhere that looks good, and start fishing. Three hours later they have covered a lot of water, caught nothing, and quietly decided that lakes are boring.
What actually went wrong is simpler than it feels. On moving water, the current hands you a presentation — it carries the fly, sets the depth, and supplies the drift. A lake hands you nothing. You supply all of it, and the very first thing you have to supply is depth. Get that wrong and the best fly in your box is just a decoration hanging in empty water.
Why Your River Instincts Fail Here
On a river you read across. You look at a run and pick out the seam, the foam line, the soft water behind a boulder, and you know that a trout is holding in one of them because current makes holding a fixed cost the fish is trying to minimise. The fish has an address. You cast to the address.
A lake deletes the address. With no current there is no reason for a trout to hold anywhere, so it doesn't — it swims, following food and comfort, covering ground all day. You are no longer casting to a lie. You are trying to intersect a travel lane, and the lane runs horizontally along a depth band rather than across the width of the water.
So the question changes. On a river it is where across? On a lake it is how deep? — and everything else is downstream of that answer. This is also why the river habit of changing flies when nothing happens is so expensive on a lake: you are adjusting the least important variable while the important one stays wrong.
Depth First

Establish how deep the bottom is, then put the fly in a known band relative to it — usually within a foot or two of the bottom, where the food lives and where a cruising trout feels safe from ospreys and loons. Known means measured: an indicator set to a distance you actually paid out, or a countdown against a sink rate you have calibrated. Not "a bit deeper."
Pattern
Only once the fly is holding a real depth does the pattern start to matter. Then you match it to what the lake is actually producing — chironomid pupae, scuds in the weed, a damsel nymph in early summer — sized to what you find rather than to what filled your river box.
Retrieve
Last, decide what the fly is supposed to be doing. A chironomid pupa ascends almost imperceptibly, so a static hang beats anything you do with your hands. A scud gets a figure-eight. The retrieve is chosen from the food item, not from impatience — and it is the subject of Part 2.
Phil Rowley, who has spent a career teaching this and wrote The Orvis Guide to Stillwater Trout Fishing, keeps the same order in his head as a three-letter shorthand — depth, retrieve, pattern — and the sequence is the point. When he is sitting in a spot without touching a fish, he checks the depth first, then the speed he is moving the fly, and only then starts opening boxes. If all three are right and nothing has happened in ten or fifteen minutes, his read is not that he needs a better fly. It's that nobody is home, and he moves.

Reading the Lake
A lake is not featureless. The features are just underwater, so you infer them instead of seeing them. Three functional zones do almost all the work: the shoal or littoral zone, running from shore out to roughly 25 feet where sunlight still reaches bottom; the drop-off where that shelf falls away; and the basin, the deep middle. The shoal is the food factory — light reaches the bottom, plants grow, and everything a trout eats lives in and around that growth. The basin is refuge, not a dining room.
That gives you a working rule for a lake you've never seen: fish the shoal and the edge where it breaks. Rowley makes the same point from the presentation side — in water of about 20 feet or less you have every option available to you, from indicators to a long leader to a slow sinking line, and once you push out past 25 or 30 feet your choices narrow to fast sinkers and a lot of waiting.
Do the reading before you leave the driveway. A bathymetric map tells you most of what you need if you know how to look at it: contour lines bunched tight mean the bottom is falling away fast, and lines spread wide mean a gradual taper. Satellite imagery shows you shoal shape and where to launch. Then let observation take over on the water — turn over a few rocks at the launch, look at the weed stalks, run the boat slowly with polarized glasses on instead of planing across the lake at full throttle, and watch for the colour change that marks the break.
Step-by-Step On the Water
- Do the homework firstPull the bathymetric map and satellite view and mark two or three candidate shoals with a defined edge. Arriving with a plan beats standing at the launch deciding whether to turn left or right.
- Sample before you rigTurn rocks, pull a weed stalk, look at what's crawling on it. A small aquarium net in the boat bag costs nothing and tells you size and colour better than any hatch chart written for someone else's water.
- Find the break, then anchor on itIdle the edge until the bottom drops, and set up so you can cover the shallow side, the lip and the deep side without moving the boat.
- Anchor bow and sternA boat on one anchor swings, and a swinging boat curves your line, which quietly destroys strike detection. Double anchoring is a presentation decision, not a parking decision.
- Measure the bottomSound it with a depth finder, or clip a weight to your leader and lower it until it touches. Write the number down. Everything after this is relative to it.
- Set a known depthUnder an indicator, pay out leader to a measured distance so the fly hangs a foot or two off bottom. On a sinking line, count it down against the table below and start near the bottom.
- Keep the count that workedWhen a fish eats, you want to be able to do it again — so know the number. Trout on a lake travel in loose company, and the next one is usually working the same band.
- Re-measure when you moveFifty yards along the same shoreline can be four feet different. The old setting is now wrong, and it will feel like the fish switched off.
The Conditions Dial
A light chop is the best condition you can ask for. It animates the fly, breaks up your silhouette, keeps the line straight, and pushes food onto the downwind bank — so fish the wind-blown shore rather than hiding from it. In a hard wind, shorten the leader, go heavier, and use the drift instead of fighting it.
Overcast pushes fish shallower and stretches the feeding window. Bright midday sun drives them down and tightens them to weed edges and structure. Adjust your depth first and your fly second — the same pattern four feet lower is usually the answer.
Clear water asks for a longer leader, finer tippet, a clear or camo intermediate and a longer cast. Stained or algal water flips it: shorter leader, heavier line, dark high-contrast silhouettes, no slack. Where clear water meets dirty, fish the seam.
Below about 50°F everything slows down — small, slow, near-static. The 50–65°F band is where most emergences happen and where a trout's metabolism runs hardest. Once surface temperatures push past roughly 61°F (66°F for browns), current thermal guidance says think hard about whether to fish at all: warm water carries less oxygen exactly when a fought fish needs more.
Common Mistakes
Nothing happens for twenty minutes, so off comes the fly and on goes another. It feels productive because it is the move that works on a river.
Work the ladder in order. Confirm the fly is at a known depth, confirm you're moving it slowly enough, and only then change the pattern. If all three check out, the problem is the address, not the fly — move the boat.
"About ten feet, probably" is not a depth. It can't be repeated, which means a fish that eats teaches you nothing.
Make depth a number every single time — a measured indicator setting or a counted sink. The goal isn't precision for its own sake; it's that success becomes reproducible.
The boat rotates through the day, the line bows, and the takes stop registering. Most anglers blame the fish.
Anchor bow and stern so the hull holds a fixed line to the fly, and re-set both when you reposition.
The middle of the lake looks like where the big ones live, so that's where the boat goes.
Fish the shoal and the drop-off edge. That's where sunlight reaches bottom, where the plants grow and where the food is — the basin is somewhere trout retreat to, not somewhere they feed.
A line labelled five inches per second is treated as though it sinks exactly five inches per second.
Treat every published sink rate as a starting point. Fly weight, leader length, water temperature and wind drift all move it. Calibrate against your own count on your own water and adjust from there.

The conversation that reorganised how I think about lakes was with Brian Chan, recorded at his home in Kamloops for the Guided series with Greg Keenan hosting. Chan spent about 35 years as a provincial fisheries biologist managing the stillwater trout fisheries of the Thompson-Nicola region — he is, quite literally, one of the people who built the fishery that made interior British Columbia famous — and he had every excuse to make it complicated.
He did the opposite. Asked where a beginner should start, he reduced the entire lake to three fly lines: a full floater for indicator work or fishing without one, an intermediate to cover roughly two to ten feet over the shoal, and a fast sinker for the deeper shoal and the drop-off edge. One rod, one reel, two spare spools. By his reckoning that covers very nearly every situation a lake will present you with. Ten years of interviews and that is still the most useful thing anyone has said to me about stillwater — not because it's clever, but because it turns an intimidating black hole into three decisions.
The detail I'd missed for years was the leader. Chan had a hand in developing stillwater lines and leaders for Scientific Anglers, including a dedicated indicator leader, and his reasoning is pure physics: a standard tapered leader is mostly thick butt section, and thick monofilament is slow to sink and reluctant to hang straight. Build it instead with a short heavy butt and a long level section, peg the indicator up close to the fly line, and the whole rig drops fast and hangs vertical under the indicator. Less hinging in the cast, and a fly that's actually where you think it is.
Brian Chan on Stillwaters
Before your first cast, clip a weight on and find the bottom — then write the number on a piece of tape on your rod. Sounds fussy. But when a fish finally eats, you'll know whether you were nine feet down or fourteen, and you'll be able to do it again on the next cast instead of spending the rest of the afternoon trying to remember what you did.
Terms You'll Hear
- Shoal
- The shallow sunlit shelf where plants and insect life grow — the lake's pantry. A Canadian usage; American anglers often say "the flat" or "the shallows."
- Littoral zone
- The technical name for the shoal: shore out to the depth where sunlight stops reaching bottom.
- Drop-off
- The slope where the shoal falls into deeper water. Both a travel route and an ambush edge.
- Basin
- The deep middle of the lake. Refuge water, not usually feeding water.
- Countdown method
- Casting, counting seconds as the fly sinks at a known rate, then retrieving — so that a productive depth can be repeated deliberately.
- Double anchoring
- Anchoring bow and stern so the boat can't swing, keeping a straight line to the fly for strike detection.
- IPS
- Inches per second — the nominal sink rate printed on a sinking line. A starting point for your count, not a guarantee.
- Chara
- Low, crunchy, mineral-encrusted bottom algae that carpets productive shoals and holds scuds. Seeing it is a good sign.
Recommended Fly Patterns
Depth first — but these are the patterns that earn their place once you're holding one. Each is fished on the shoal or the drop-off edge, within a foot or two of the bottom.

One honest note: we don't currently stock slip indicators or a dedicated stillwater indicator leader. Build the leader yourself on Chan's logic — a short heavy butt section, then a long level run of tippet to the fly, with the indicator pegged close to the fly line so the rig hangs vertical instead of hinging.
