Born Joseph White Brooks in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland, Joe Brooks was an American fly fisherman and prolific writer whose influence on the sport remains significant today.

The writer who opened the world

Brooks wrote for the leading fishing and outdoor magazines of his era, including Field & Stream, The Fisherman, and Outdoor Life. His writing expanded the world of fly fishing for a generation of readers.

In particular he had a profound effect on spreading the word about places like Montana, Argentina, Africa, New Zealand, and the Caribbean — destinations that at the time were neither well known nor commonplace in fly fishing. Much of what we now consider the standard bucket list exists because Brooks went there first and wrote it down.

Chasing what couldn't be caught

Now we laugh when people claim a species can't be caught on a fly. But Brooks pioneered fly fishing for fish previously considered impossible, and his knack for adventure and early advocacy was genuinely unique. That exploratory passion came through in everything he did.

The Lefty Kreh connection

A lesser-known fact about Brooks concerns his relationship with other prominent anglers. Lefty Kreh, one of the greatest fly fishermen who ever lived, credited Brooks with introducing him to fly fishing, encouraging his writing, and helping him secure one of his first jobs in the industry.

That's the measure of the man — his influence runs not just through his own work but through the people he brought into the sport.

His legacy

Joe Brooks may have passed, but his legacy lives on, inspiring anglers to explore the world's waters with a fly rod. I love his sense of adventure and exploration, and it's something I personally strive for in my own fishing.
