What is the difference between ecology and entomology for an angler?

Entomology is the study of insects, hydrology the study of water, and dendrology the study of trees; ecology is the generalist discipline that connects them. For an angler that distinction matters, because most on-the-water problems are ecological rather than entomological: why fish hold in one seam, what the streamside vegetation is producing, whether the water is cold enough. Fly fishing and ecology feed each other, since knowing where fish hold prompts the question of why, and the answer usually turns out to be oxygen, temperature or structure.

Why do Oregon coastal rivers fish early while mountain rivers are blown out?

The Oregon Coast Range is much lower than the Cascades and carries far less snowpack, so coastal rivers do not get the early-season runoff surge that turns the higher rivers brown in late spring. That makes coastal water the sensible choice when the trout season opens in late May or early June, and local fly shops will tell you the same. The trade-off is that those same coastal rivers have no snowmelt to feed them later, so they warm quickly and drop hard between June and September.

What does large woody debris tell you about where fish hold?

Large woody debris is the hydrology term for the fallen trees and limbs anglers call structure, and agencies literally run counts of it as a habitat metric. If it is worth doing scientific research on, it is worth reading a river for, and a stretch with more large woody debris simply holds more habitat. The same logic applies to temperature: an average water temperature tells you very little compared with knowing how many cold spots or spring inputs exist per mile, which is what turns a brutal winter day into a good one.

Why does streamside vegetation matter to trout fishing?

Streamside vegetation shades the water, holds the banks together, and supports the insects that hatch and fall into the river. When banks are stripped, erosion widens and shallows the channel, the water warms, and the habitat degrades. In western Oregon the specific problem is invasive blackberry, which smothers native shrubs and regrows from the roots in a wet climate; Oregon's riparian lands tax incentive lets landowners file a short management plan and receive a tax break for removing invasives and replanting natives.

How does a forest canopy change which flies work at midday?

Under old-growth Douglas fir, a river can sit in shade for most of the day, which means non-terrestrial dry flies keep producing through midday when they would be dead on an exposed river. Heavy canopy also removes the back cast entirely, so roll casting is the default rather than a special skill. On open, high-elevation water with little streamside vegetation, the midday answer swings the other way toward terrestrials and streamers, because more light is reaching and warming the water.

Do you need to match the hatch exactly?

For most water, matching the silhouette and the size does more than matching the species, since trout are not counting tails on a nymph. A parachute Adams is a reasonable first fly across Oregon, Montana, Utah, Idaho and Colorado unless conditions clearly call for something else. The exceptions run in both directions: heavily pressured rivers near town hold educated fish that have seen every pattern, while trout in high alpine lakes are opportunists that will take a big protein-rich fly regardless of what is hatching.

How do agricultural corridors change the way you read a coastal river?

Coastal rivers running through farm ground are managed differently from wild rivers on national forest land, with vegetation cut back and livestock often on the far bank. With less overhanging cover producing terrestrial food, reading the river shifts toward riffle tailouts and toward dropping streamers through the slower water. Water rights also shape those rivers: senior rights holders draw first in low-water years, and coastal towns often rely on the same rivers for municipal supply, so carrying a thermometer is worth the space.
