Fly Fishing Mexico: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips

Fly Fishing Mexico: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips

Mexico fly fishing splits by coast. On the Caribbean side, Ascension Bay in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve holds permit and bonefish year-round, with adult tarpon from May through summer. On the Pacific side, Baja California Sur and the mainland coast are roosterfish, jacks and snapper water. Fly into Cancún for the flats.

Mexico is two fly fishing countries sharing one passport stamp. On the Caribbean side, the Yucatán's flats hold permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook, with Ascension Bay as the headline. On the Pacific side, Baja California Sur and the mainland coast are surf, rock and bluewater fishing: roosterfish, jacks, snapper and dorado. The flies, the rods and the way you read the water barely overlap, so pick a coast before you pick a lodge.

This page is the Mexico map: where each fishery sits, when it fishes, how the permits and reserve fees work, the lodge Frontiers books in Ascension Bay, and what our guests have shared on the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast. If you are weighing Mexico against its neighbor, read Fly Fishing Belize too; the permit water runs right across the border.

The most honest Mexico conversation in our archive is with Rick Passek, a lifelong Alberta and British Columbia stillwater angler and fly tyer who traded the Canadian lakes for a stretch of living in Mexico, on the episode we published to YouTube on October 22, 2024. He did not arrive knowing the salt. He spent about a year beforehand studying videos and tying shrimp and big baitfish patterns, then learned the rest on the beach by watching and asking. His first lesson was the simplest one: watch the birds. When they are diving, there is bait, and where there is bait, there are bigger fish under it. His second came from a traveling angler he met on the coast, who showed him a saltwater version of a hopper-dropper: a popper on top with a small fly hung about three feet below it. Rick hooked a snapper on his second cast with it. And when the surf was too big to fly fish safely, he said so plainly and threw a spoon, which is the kind of judgment that keeps a DIY Mexico trip fun.

Where to Fly Fish in Mexico

  • Ascension Bay and Punta Allen, Quintana Roo: the permit water Mexico is famous for. The bay sits inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and holds permit from pan-sized juveniles to solitary fish over thirty pounds, bonefish in real numbers year-round, resident juvenile tarpon in the lagoons, and snook. Punta Allen, a lobster-fishing village on the bay's northeastern point, is the base.
  • The Xcalak coast, on the Belize border: the village at the southern tip of Quintana Roo, a few miles from the Belize border, where Mexico's Caribbean flats run toward Belize's.
  • Baja California Sur: roosterfish water, worked from the beach and from pangas, with bait balls, jacks and dorado offshore. Roosterfish are reserved for sport fishing by Mexican law within 50 nautical miles of the coast. Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side is one of the named bases in our Tips Library.
  • The mainland Pacific coast: the beaches, river mouths and rocky points Rick Passek fished: roosterfish and snook off the sand, snapper and barracuda off the rocks, and a long list of species you cannot predict. Surf size decides whether a fly rod is even the right tool on a given day.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Mexico

For Ascension Bay the answer is unusually simple: bonefish and permit are a year-round proposition, and the one element with a real calendar is the adult tarpon run, fish of 80 to 150 pounds that start arriving at the beginning of May and build through summer. The practical constraint is the lodge calendar: the Palometa Club's 2026 season runs January 16 to June 26 and July 10 to December 11. No agency or lodge publishes permit seasonality for the bay, so there is deliberately no permit row in the table below; the bonefish and tarpon rows follow the lodge's own description.

Mexico Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

When is the best time to fly fish Ascension Bay, Mexico?

Bonefish and permit are catchable in Ascension Bay year-round, which is rare among Caribbean flats. Adult tarpon of 80 to 150 pounds arrive at the beginning of May and build through summer, so May to September is the window for a grand slam with a big tarpon. The Palometa Club's 2026 season runs January 16 to June 26 and July 10 to December 11.

How much does a Mexico fly fishing trip cost?

The Palometa Club in Ascension Bay, booked through Frontiers International Travel, starts from $4,950 per angler for a 5 to 7 night stay, with meals, guided fishing, transfers and fishing licences included. On top of that, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve charges an entry fee of 225 Mexican pesos per person per day. Flights and gratuities are extra.

Do you need a fishing licence to fly fish in Mexico?

Yes, if you fish from a boat: Mexico's sport fishing rules under NOM-017-PESC-1994 require a CONAPESCA permit for vessel fishing, and the same rule sets a daily bag of ten fish with tarpon capped at two. Lodge packages such as the Palometa Club bundle the licence, so most guided anglers never buy one separately. A DIY angler fishing from a boat does.

Can you keep tarpon or roosterfish in Mexico?

Mexican law reserves tarpon, roosterfish, marlin, sailfish, swordfish and dorado exclusively for sport fishing within 50 nautical miles of the coast, under Article 68 of the Ley General de Pesca y Acuacultura Sustentables. On the Ascension Bay flats, guides fish almost entirely catch-and-release by practice. Release bonefish, permit and tarpon quickly, and confirm current rules with your lodge.

Mexico or Belize for permit?

Both share the same Caribbean permit country. Ascension Bay in Mexico is the bigger reputation and a dedicated lodge week reached from Cancún, while Belize's Ambergris Caye gives you wadeable flats and dock fishing between guided days from a shorter domestic hop. Choose Ascension Bay for a permit-first week; choose Belize for a mixed DIY and guided trip.
