Practice Before You Fish: Casting Lessons from Heather Hodson

Heather Hodson on the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast

Heather Hodson founded United Women on the Fly, a community that connects and teaches anglers around the world. On this episode she shares how she approaches learning to cast, why she wishes she had started with a two-handed rod, and how to get the most from your practice time.

Get a lesson before you build bad habits

Heather took a lesson before she ever tried two-handed casting because she did not want to learn it the wrong way. She now loves teaching students who have never held a fly rod, since they have no habits to undo. If you are new, or newly curious about a different style, one good lesson early saves a lot of frustration later.

Why the roll cast matters so much

She says that if she could do it again she would learn two-handed casting before single-handed. The reasoning is that a proper roll cast and anchor placement teach you how the rod loads, and those skills make the single-handed cast easier. When she coaches people now, she often starts with the roll cast.

Practice like a basketball player

Heather's favorite analogy is that players do not become good at free throws without shooting free throws. Casting is the same. Practice before you go fishing, not while you are trying to catch fish. She sees anglers spend a lot on a destination trip and then arrive without having practiced, which limits their trip.

A simple routine works. Pick one skill, such as your double haul or roll cast. Practice twenty minutes on grass or water several times a week. Set targets, record yourself on your phone, and fix one thing at a time.

Community and budget-friendly trips

She also talks about the community side. United Women on the Fly is free to join and welcoming to everyone, and she designs trips with a fish-bum budget in mind so travel feels less intimidating. Redfish casting events and challenges through Fly Fishers International give anglers a low-pressure way to improve together.
