How is Salmon-Safe different from hiring a consultant?
Salmon-Safe deliberately stops short of consulting. The program supplies a peer-reviewed best-management-practices document, contracts an independent third-party assessor to evaluate the property against it, and tells the grower which components fall short. On chemistry, that means handing over a high-hazard list built from peer review and asking the grower to phase those compounds out, rather than prescribing a replacement product. What is 6PPD and why does it kill coho salmon?
6PPD is an anti-degradant added to tires to delay cracking and extend tire life. As tires wear, the compound reacts with ozone and washes off roadways into streams, where researchers found it acutely lethal to salmon, coho in particular, as they move from salt into fresh water. The compound was isolated in December 2020 after years of research by Washington State University working with NOAA and other groups.
