Fly Fishing Massachusetts: Stripers, Trout, Seasons and Tips

Massachusetts fly fishing is two trips in one small state: striped bass on Cape Cod flats, beaches and estuaries from May to November, with false albacore and bonito on the southern coast in late summer, plus cold trout water like the Swift River below Quabbin, the Deerfield, the Westfield and Cape Cod's sea-run brook trout streams.

MassWildlife stocks nearly 450,000 trout a year in more than 450 lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and trout season is open all year statewide. On the coast, the Division of Marine Fisheries says striped bass are found in Massachusetts waters from May to November, usually at river mouths, in shallow bays and estuaries and along rocky shores and sandy beaches.

The Massachusetts story in our archive belongs to Peter Vandergrift of Cheeky Fly Fishing and North Point Brands. On Episode 104, published February 2, 2021, he explained that Cheeky started in New England and had its headquarters in North Adams, in western Massachusetts, in an old textile mill. He described the Cheeky Schoolie Tournament: a one-day, catch-and-release striped bass event for teams of two whose boundaries take in all of Cape Cod from the Canal, where each team photographs, measures and releases its four longest fish. It started in a dirt parking lot; he said more than 220 teams fished it during the pandemic and the event gave $15,000 from its proceeds to striped bass conservation. Back on the show in September 2024, he called it the largest fly fishing tournament in the world, wade fishing only, and said that year's slots sold out in 10 days.

Where to Fly Fish in Massachusetts

Cape Cod Flats, Beaches and Estuaries

Cape Cod is the heart of Massachusetts striper fishing on the fly, and it suits anglers without a boat. Peter Vandergrift told the podcast he sees the Cape as a premier do-it-yourself destination: you can fish a creek mouth in sandals, work a jetty, wade an estuary or salt pond, or sight fish the flats, where he described 10 to 20 pound stripers pushing bait over bright sand in less than knee-deep water. He added that an angler could spend a lifetime mastering a single eel pond. Learn the tides for each spot before you go and respect posted private property.

Martha's Vineyard, Buzzards Bay and the Southern Coast

The Division of Marine Fisheries says fishing for false albacore and Atlantic bonito is growing in popularity along the state's southern coast, with late-summer fishing now targeting them. In 2025 DMF set a 16-inch minimum and a combined limit of five fish per person for the two species.

Swift River

The Swift flows out of Quabbin Reservoir below Winsor Dam in Belchertown. MassWildlife says it is fed by cold, clean water from deep within Quabbin, which supports wild and stocked trout all year. From Winsor Dam to Route 9 it is fly fishing only and catch and release. From Route 9 to Cady Lane, artificial lures and catch and release apply from July 1 to December 31. MassWildlife has studied this 5.5-mile tailwater since 2017, including a wild brook trout tagging project that began in 2023.

Deerfield River

The Deerfield in the northwest corner of the state has two catch-and-release areas: from Fife Brook Dam to the Hoosac Tunnel, and from Pelham Brook to the Mohawk Campground. Flows below the dams change with hydropower releases, so check the schedule before you wade.

Westfield, Millers and Nissitissit Rivers

The East Branch of the Westfield is catch and release from the Chesterfield Gorge parking lot to the gate above the Corps of Engineers lot at Knightville in Huntington. The Millers has two catch-and-release sections, one in Athol and one from the Wendell Road bridge in Orange to the breached dam in Erving center. The Nissitissit, from the New Hampshire border to the Prescott Street Bridge, is fly fishing only.

Housatonic River

In the Berkshires, the Housatonic has catch-and-release water from the Route 20 bridge in Lee to Willow Mill Dam and from Glendale Dam to the railroad bridge in Stockbridge. From the confluence of the East and West Branches to the Connecticut line, the limit outside those areas is one trout of at least 20 inches. From June 15 to August 31, fishing is closed within 100 feet of the mouths of Beartown, Goose Pond, Hop and Mohawk Brooks.

Red Brook and the Quashnet: Sea-Run Brook Trout

Red Brook runs about 4.5 miles from White Island Pond to Buttermilk Bay in Wareham, and the whole length is catch and release. MassWildlife says resident brook trout live there all year and some are sea-run "salters" that drop into salt water to grow. Park at The Trustees' Lyman Reserve on Head of the Bay Road for the lower brook, and avoid disturbing spawning trout in October and November. The Quashnet, from John's Pond to just below Route 28, is also catch and release.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Massachusetts

Trout season is open all year; the striper calendar follows the migration. Treat this table as general guidance built from MassWildlife and DMF information and our guests' comments, not hatch or run data.

Target JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC
Striped bass (coast and Cape Cod)
False albacore and bonito
Swift River trout
Stocked trout rivers
Sea-run brook trout streams

Intensity:LightModerateHeavy

Blank cells mean not worth planning around. October and November are left blank on the sea-run streams to give spawning brook trout room.

Massachusetts Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

How much is a nonresident Massachusetts fishing license?

MassWildlife lists a nonresident freshwater fishing license at $50 and a nonresident 3-day license at $30.50, with a $5 Wildlands Conservation Stamp added to every nonresident license. Residents pay $40. Licenses run for the calendar year, and anglers 15 and older need one in fresh water.

Do I need a saltwater permit to fly fish for stripers in Massachusetts?

Yes, if you are 16 or older. The recreational saltwater fishing permit costs $10 for anglers under 60 and is free at 60 and over. Nonresidents holding a valid Connecticut, New Hampshire or Rhode Island saltwater permit are covered, and anglers on a permitted charter or head boat do not need their own.

When is the best time to fly fish Cape Cod for striped bass?

DMF says striped bass are in Massachusetts waters from May to November as they migrate north in spring and back south in fall. DMF adds that a few stripers stay through the winter. Tides matter more than the calendar on the flats, so plan each session around the tide at the spot you want to fish.

Can you keep a striped bass in Massachusetts?

One per angler per day, and only if it measures at least 28 inches and less than 31 inches in total length. Recreational anglers may not gaff striped bass, and anyone fishing with whole or cut natural bait must use inline circle hooks. Many fly anglers release every striper, and the Schoolie Tournament is catch and release only.

Where can you fly fish for trout all winter in Massachusetts?

The Swift River below Winsor Dam. MassWildlife says cold water from deep in Quabbin Reservoir supports trout there all year, and the dam-to-Route 9 stretch is fly fishing only and catch and release. Statewide trout season runs January 1 to December 31.

Is Massachusetts good for DIY fly fishing?

Yes, especially on the coast. Peter Vandergrift told the podcast the Cape rewards wade anglers who learn the tides and access points, and the Schoolie Tournament he described is wade fishing only.
