Fly Fishing New Jersey: Trout Streams, Delaware River and Stripers

Location Details / New Jersey

Fly Fishing New Jersey: Trout Streams, Delaware River and Stripers

New Jersey fly fishing runs from the South Branch Raritan's catch-and-release Ken Lockwood Gorge and the Musconetcong, Pequest and Big Flat Brook in the northwest to smallmouth and shad on the Delaware River, and striped bass, bluefish and false albacore around Sandy Hook and Barnegat Bay on the Atlantic side.

New Jersey surprises people who only know it from the Turnpike: a trout gorge in Hunterdon County in the morning, a Sandy Hook beach by evening. NJ Fish and Wildlife sets the rules, and they changed in 2026, so keep the digest open.

The closest voice on the podcast is upstream. Bill Longstreet guides the Upper Delaware, and on the episode Catching Fish on a Difficult Fishery and a Dry Dropper Tip, released on our audio feed on March 20, 2025, he told me how a stop at a boat launch behind Joe Demalderis's shop turned into a talk about fish and the offer of a guiding spot. His bug calendar runs Hendricksons from late April, then March Browns, Drakes and Isonychia from June through October. His top tip for those picky trout: learn a reach cast. That is New York and Pennsylvania water, upstream of New Jersey's stretch of the Delaware.

Where to Fly Fish in New Jersey

South Branch Raritan and Ken Lockwood Gorge

Ridge and Valley Trout Unlimited calls the South Branch one of New Jersey's premier trout streams, with wild and stocked fish and Hendricksons, Sulphurs and caddis from mid-April into early June. The heart of it is Ken Lockwood Gorge, about 2.2 miles near Califon, catch and release all year: artificial lures and flies, barbless hooks, three hook points at most. From the mill dam above Schooleys Mountain Road to Lake Solitude dam, outside the gorge, New Jersey manages for wild browns with a 12-inch minimum. Spring stocking closures fall on Tuesdays.

Musconetcong River

The Musky runs from Lake Hopatcong dam to the Delaware, with old dams removed along the way. The Point Mountain Stretch, about 1.2 miles from the Penwell Road bridge to the Point Mountain Road bridge, is a Year-Round Trout Conservation Area: artificial lures and flies only, and one fish of 15 inches or better. Expect March Browns and Sulphurs from late April through June. Spring stocking closures on the rest of the river fall on Fridays.

Pequest River

Home to the Pequest Trout Hatchery, the source of the state's stocked trout. The Seasonal Trout Conservation Area runs about 1.4 miles from the Conrail bridge above the hatchery road down to the Route 625 bridge. It is catch and release from March 23 to April 10, closes on the first six in-season stocking dates, and drops its gear limits from opening day to May 24, so check the digest first.

Big Flat Brook

Up in Sussex County, the Flat Brook runs from Stokes State Forest to the Delaware. Its Catch and Release Area covers 4.2 miles from the Route 206 bridge to Roy Bridge, including the Blewett Tract, with the same barbless rules as Ken Lockwood and fishing open all year. Stocked water outside it closes on Thursdays during spring stocking.

Delaware River

New Jersey's stretch is mainly a bass and shad river. American shad peak past Lambertville around mid-April, with two a day legal on the main stem. Smallmouth pick up in May but are catch and release from April 18 to June 12. Trout gather at the mouths of the Musconetcong, Pequest and Flat Brook. Stripers below the Calhoun Street Bridge in Trenton are closed in April and May.

Sandy Hook

Part of Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook gives you beach and bay. The Fisherman points to Parking Lots A, B and C and Gunnison Beach for spring and fall stripers, the Rip off North Beach for blues and false albacore in summer and early fall, and the wadable Plum Island flats behind Lot B. Fishing is barred on lifeguarded beaches during duty hours and near posted shorebird nesting areas. After-hours passes for 2026 are sold out.

Barnegat Bay

Behind Island Beach State Park, the bay's sedges, channels and cuts hold bass, blues and weakfish. Salt Water Sportsman places big spring bass on the shoals near Barnegat Inlet and early-summer weakfish at the deep cut off the Sedge Islands. Those are conventional-tackle reports, so treat them as a map. On Episode 121, released June 1, 2021, Henry Cowen told then-host Greg that stripers eat on the pause, about 90 percent of the time. He was talking about lakes, but the habit travels.

New Jersey Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

How much is a nonresident New Jersey fishing license?

The 2026 New Jersey digest lists a nonresident freshwater license at $34, a 2-day vacation license at $9 and a 7-day license at $19.50, and a nonresident trout stamp at $20. Residents 16 to 64 pay $22.50, with a $10.50 stamp. The stamp applies even when you release every trout.

Do you need a license to fly fish saltwater in New Jersey?

No license, but anglers 16 and older must join the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry, which is free and renews every calendar year. Anglers in tidal freshwater must register too. Sandy Hook also requires a permit to fish between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

When does trout season open in New Jersey?

Since 2026, opening day falls on the second Saturday in April at 8 a.m. Trout-stocked rivers and streams close to all fishing for the three weeks before it, March 23 to April 11 in 2026. The daily limit is six trout through May 31, then two. Catch and Release Areas stay open under their own rules.

Where can you catch and release trout on a fly in New Jersey?

NJ Fish and Wildlife lists two Catch and Release Areas: about 2.2 miles of the South Branch Raritan in Ken Lockwood Gorge and 4.2 miles of Big Flat Brook, Route 206 down to Roy Bridge. Both are open all year, with artificial lures and flies only, barbless hooks and no more than three hook points.

Can you fish the Delaware River with one state's license?

Yes, on the main stem. New Jersey and Pennsylvania recognize each other's fishing licenses from shoreline to shoreline, from a boat or either bank. You still follow the fishing regulations of the state whose side of the centerline you are on, and reciprocity stops at the tributaries.

When do striped bass run at Sandy Hook and Barnegat Bay?

Bass follow bunker along the beaches on the spring and fall runs, so plan roughly around April to June and October to December, and check recent reports. New Jersey allows one striper a day from 28 to 31 inches. Marine waters away from the ocean close in January and February.
