Tip

Tip: Keep a landed steelhead wet in at least 1 to 2 feet of water, do not drag it onto rocks or shallows

How to do it: Use a large net and, where possible, a partner, keep the fish submerged, take only a brief photo if any, and release promptly

Mistake it fixes: Dragging a fish onto rocks or into the shallows

Why it works: Air exposure, abrasion, and handling stress reduce survival and spawning success. Keeping the fish wet protects its slime coat and gills.

When it matters most: Catch-and-release steelhead
