Fly Fishing Vermont: Rivers, Lakes, Seasons and Tips
Vermont fly fishing means small, cold freestone streams with wild brook trout, the catch-and-release Batten Kill below Manchester, stocked trophy trout sections on rivers like the Deerfield, Otter Creek and Winooski, and big-lake fishing for landlocked salmon, lake trout and smallmouth bass on Lake Champlain and Lake Memphremagog.
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department (VFWD) manages most rivers and streams so you can fish them all year: the trout harvest season runs from the second Saturday in April through October 31, and outside it you can still fish with artificial flies and lures if every trout goes back.
The Vermont voice in our archive belongs to Antoine Bissieux, a French-born guide who has fished the Northeast for most of his 36 years in the United States. On the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast episode Taking Time to Dissect the Pursuits of Anglers in the Top 10%, he told Christian that after a few years in New York he moved to Vermont, worked at the Orvis fly fishing school in Manchester for about seven years and guided in Vermont before a guiding job took him to Connecticut's Farmington River. Teaching pushed him to seek out and fish with the most productive anglers in Europe. The lesson he brought home is the one we would hand any first-time Vermont angler: "Do not try to catch a fish, try to do five things right."

Where to Fly Fish in Vermont
Batten Kill
The Batten Kill is Vermont's best-known trout river, and Manchester, where its special-regulation water ends, is where the American Museum of Fly Fishing was established in 1968. From the New York line upstream 20.6 miles to the Depot Street bridge (Routes 11 and 30) in Manchester, every trout must be released immediately, and that section is closed from November 1 to the Friday before the second Saturday in April. It is also a restricted baitfish water, and the state's index lists whirling disease as present, so clean and dry your waders and boots before you move to another river.
Trophy Trout Streams
VFWD stocks thousands of two-year-old brook, rainbow and brown trout, some longer than 18 inches, in 11 designated trophy sections each spring. They include the Deerfield River in Searsburg, Otter Creek in Danby and Mount Tabor, the Lamoille in Fairfax, the Winooski from Bolton Dam to Waterbury, the Black River in Weathersfield and Cavendish, the Missisquoi in Enosburg and Sheldon, the Walloomsac near Bennington and the Passumpsic in St. Johnsbury. The limit is two trout a day in season; catch and release with flies and lures is open all year.
Wild Brook Trout Streams
Most of the state's mileage is small, forested freestone water, and VFWD says many streams with good habitat hold wild brook, rainbow and brown trout. On general-regulation streams you may keep eight trout a day in season, any mix of brook, brown and rainbow. Some spawning tributaries close from March 16 through May 31, including Locust Creek and Lilliesville Brook on the White River.
Willoughby River and the Northeast Kingdom
Each spring, steelhead-strain rainbow trout run from Lake Memphremagog up the Willoughby River and leap the falls in Orleans. The falls section in Orleans Village is closed to all fishing from March 16 through May 31, so watch the run and fish elsewhere. On the nearby Clyde River in Newport City, from Lake Memphremagog up to just below the old mill dam, salmon are catch and release with artificial flies and lures only from September 1 to October 31.
Lake Champlain
Lake Champlain's legal waters include its lower tributaries up to the first barrier, such as the Lamoille to Peterson Dam in Milton, Otter Creek to the Vergennes dam and the Winooski to the Winooski One dam. Under Vermont's Lake Champlain rules, landlocked salmon (15-inch minimum, two a day) and lake trout (15 inches, three a day) are open all year, as are brook, brown and rainbow trout (12 inches, three combined). Bass harvest runs from the second Saturday in June to November 30, with a 12-inch minimum. A Vermont license covers most of the lake, including New York water west to the New York shore, but not South Bay or New York tributaries.
Connecticut River and Lake Memphremagog
Vermont and New Hampshire resident licenses are both valid on the Connecticut River between the two states, including bays and tributaries up to the first highway bridge. On Lake Memphremagog, a 2026 rule limits anglers to one lake trout a day, with a 24-inch minimum.
When to Go Fly Fishing in Vermont
Vermont is a cold-water state: the Hendrickson hatch drives May and June, summer heat pushes trout to cold water and fall brings spawning browns and active salmon. Treat this table as general guidance built from VFWD rules and our own Hendrickson hatch chart, not a hatch guarantee.

Bissieux's upstream skitter is worth learning before a Vermont caddis evening: cast a curve above the fish, let the line settle, then lift the rod tip so the fly skates upstream like a real insect. We broke it down step by step in The Upstream Skitter. For a laugh, hear mako guide Conway Bowman on Guided EP #1 tell of a Vermont client whose biggest fish was 12 inches: he sat down at the sight of a 300-pound mako, then landed that same shark eight hours later.

Vermont Fly Fishing Questions, Answered
How much is a nonresident Vermont fishing license?
VFWD lists a nonresident annual fishing license at $54, a 1-day license at $21, a 3-day license at $23 and a 7-day license at $31. Residents pay $28 for an annual license. Anglers under 15 do not need a fishing license, and youth licenses for ages 15 to 17 cost $8 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.
When is trout season in Vermont?
The trout harvest season runs from the second Saturday in April through October 31. Outside those dates, most rivers and streams stay open year-round for catch and release with artificial flies and lures only, unless the Index of Rivers and Streams lists a special rule or closure. The Batten Kill special-regulation section is one of those exceptions.
Can you fly fish the Batten Kill?
Yes, as catch and release. On the 20.6 miles from the New York line to the Depot Street bridge in Manchester, every trout goes back, and the section is closed from November 1 until the Friday before the second Saturday in April. Clean your gear afterward: the state lists whirling disease in the river.
Does a Vermont license cover Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River?
Mostly. A Vermont fishing license lets you fish Lake Champlain west to the New York shore, but not South Bay or New York tributaries. On the Connecticut River, Vermont and New Hampshire resident licenses are valid on the boundary water and its tributaries up to the first highway bridge.
Is Vermont worth a fly fishing trip?
For anglers who like small water and history, yes. You can fish wild brook trout in the morning, see the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester at lunch and fish the Batten Kill in the evening. Add Lake Champlain salmon in spring or fall, and a short state offers a lot of variety.
