Fly Fishing West Virginia: Brook Trout, Rivers, Seasons and Tips

West Virginia fly fishing is an Appalachian headwaters trip: native brook trout in mountain streams, catch-and-release and fly-fishing-only trout water on the Elk, Cranberry, Blackwater and North Fork of the South Branch, a late-May sulfur hatch, smallmouth in the New River Gorge and a musky fishery that keeps growing.

The brook trout is the state fish and West Virginia's only native trout. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) says its crews have added thousands of tons of limestone to acidified streams, and more than 350 miles of streams now hold the pH brook trout need. Add stocked trout, then smallmouth and musky in the bigger rivers, and one trip can run from a creek you can step across to a canyon float.

The West Virginia story in our archive that sticks belongs to Curtis Fleming, host of the fly fishing television series Fly Rod Chronicles, who grew up the son of a coal miner and has caught fish in 48 states. On the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast episode Fly Fishing in West Virginia Remains the Hidden Gem, he told Christian that musky was the fish he could not catch. A 12-year-old guest landed one in the mid-40-inch range on camera while Fleming went three years without. Bored during the pandemic, his crew started counting casts. His first musky came on cast 9,888, and his second came 48 casts later. He also described a sulfur evening on the Slatyfork section of the Elk when a pool that looked empty started to boil like a Jacuzzi.

Where to Fly Fish in West Virginia

Elk River

The Elk is the sulfur river Fleming talked about, with evening hatches so thick he said you pull a buff over your nose and glasses. WVDNR lists the Elk above Webster Springs among its year-round trout waters and manages three catch-and-release sections in the drainage: the 4.6-mile Slatyfork section in Pocahontas County, 2 miles from Elk Springs Campground to the Rose Run bridge in Randolph County, and 4 miles of the Back Fork of Elk River above Webster Springs.

Cranberry and Williams Rivers

Both drain the high country of the Monongahela National Forest. On the Cranberry, 4.3 miles from the junction of the North and South forks down to the low water bridge at Dogway Fork are catch and release. Dogway Fork and its tributaries are fly fishing only. On the Williams, a 2-mile delayed harvest section starts below Tea Creek, and the Middle Fork of the Williams is catch and release.

Shavers Fork and the Blackwater

Shavers Fork carries a 5.5-mile delayed harvest section from the mouth of Whitmeadow Run down to McGee Run (catch and release November 1 to May 15). The Blackwater has 3.5 miles of catch-and-release water from Blackwater Falls State Park down to the North Fork.

North Fork of the South Branch and Seneca Creek

Fleming traced the Potomac drainage from Seneca Rocks into the mountains, where it narrows to native brook trout and wild rainbows you can hike in to reach. WVDNR keeps a 0.75-mile catch-and-release section of the North Fork of the South Branch at the mouth of Seneca Creek near the Seneca Rocks visitor center, plus the first 0.20 mile of Seneca Creek.

New River Gorge

The National Park Service protects 53 miles of the New River between Bluestone and Hawks Nest dams, and Congress made it New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in December 2020. WVDNR makes 12 miles from the I-64 bridge at Sandstone down to the Grandview Sandbar access catch and release for black bass. On most of the rest of the New in West Virginia, bass from 14 to 22 inches go back.

South Branch, Greenbrier and the Eastern Panhandle

The South Branch of the Potomac produced the state record smallmouth in 1971 (24.25 inches, 9.75 pounds) and has two catch-and-release bass areas: 8 miles in Hardy County below Petersburg Gap and 9.5 miles in Hampshire County below Romney. On the Greenbrier, 6 miles from Caldwell to Ronceverte carry a 12 to 20 inch protected slot. Near Harpers Ferry, Fleming pointed to floats on the Shenandoah and Potomac.

Musky Rivers

WVDNR's musky list includes the Elk below Sutton, the Gauley, Little Kanawha, Buckhannon, Tygart, West Fork and New rivers. The state record, 55.0625 inches and 51 pounds, came from the Little Kanawha in 2022. The Buckhannon Pool and part of Middle Island Creek are catch and release for musky, and the statewide minimum is 30 inches.

When to Go Fly Fishing in West Virginia

West Virginia has fish to chase in all 12 months; Fleming once filmed a series called 13 Months in West Virginia to prove it. Treat this table as general guidance built from WVDNR rules and our guests' comments, not hatch data.

Blank cells mean not worth planning around. Our West Virginia article puts it simply: fish the high brook trout country in spring and fall, and drop to the big rivers for smallmouth and musky in midsummer when the headwaters run warm and thin.

West Virginia Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

How much is a nonresident West Virginia fishing license?

WVDNR's 2026 summary lists the nonresident annual fishing license (Class F) at $37, plus a required $13 conservation and law enforcement stamp. To fish for trout, add the $16 nonresident trout stamp, so a trout angler pays $66. Fishing on national forest land, including the Monongahela, also needs a $2 national forest stamp. A one-day nonresident license is $3, though it still needs the $13 stamp, and anglers under 15 are exempt.

When is the sulfur hatch in West Virginia?

Curtis Fleming told the podcast you can set your clock by it: the sulfurs start around Memorial Day weekend, from about May 25, and run roughly three weeks into June. His best evenings are on the Elk River drainage, including Slatyfork, where he says the hatch gets thick enough that you want a buff over your face.

Where are the catch-and-release trout streams in West Virginia?

WVDNR's 2026 list includes sections of the Elk (Slatyfork, Randolph County and the Back Fork), the Cranberry, Blackwater, North Fork of the South Branch at Seneca Creek, Glade Creek of the New, the Middle Fork of the Williams and Mill Creek in Kumbrabow State Forest. They are daylight only, artificial flies and lures only, and no trout may be kept.

Is West Virginia good for native brook trout?

Yes. The brook trout is the state fish, and Fleming described miles and miles of brook trout streams for anglers who want native and wild fish. WVDNR's liming program has brought more than 350 miles of acidified streams back to brook trout pH. Expect small, brushy water: short rods, short casts and a quiet approach.

Can you fly fish the New River Gorge for smallmouth?

Yes, and it is the state's best-known smallmouth float. The 12 miles from Sandstone down to Grandview Sandbar are catch and release for black bass, and elsewhere on the New in West Virginia bass from 14 to 22 inches must go back. Fleming says he has lost count of the shows he has filmed there.

Is West Virginia a good musky state?

It has become one. Fleming said West Virginia turned into a musky fishing state, drawing anglers from out of state, and the record fish, a 55-inch, 51-pound musky, came from the Little Kanawha in 2022. Bring patience: it took him 9,888 casts to land his first.
