Fly Fishing Wyoming: Guides, Lodges, Seasons and Tips
Wyoming fly fishing runs on wind, altitude and cutthroat. Native Yellowstone and Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat fill the northwest, tailwaters like the North Platte and the Green below Fontenelle Dam hold up when freestones are high or warm, and high-country water peaks July through September. Fly into Jackson Hole, Casper or Cody.
Wyoming is the state I tell people to pack for before I tell them where to fish. The wind is the defining condition here, and it will strip the warmth and the energy out of you on a mild day. The trade is solitude: wide-open country, lightly fished water, and creeks that never make the magazine lists. If you are an early riser you get the calm, and some of the best dry-fly water of the trip happens before the breeze picks up.
This page is the Wyoming map: the waters worth planning around, when they fish, the rules that change from Yellowstone National Park to state water, and the ranch Frontiers books. For our longer take on the state, read The Top 10 Rivers for Fly Fishing in Wyoming and Why to Go.
The most important Wyoming insight in our archive is a conservation one, and it shapes how you should fish the park. Alice Owsley of Riverside Anglers, who has guided wade trips inside Yellowstone National Park for years, told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast on the Guided episode published November 27, 2020 that she watched the native Yellowstone cutthroat of the upper Yellowstone River decline over her career after lake trout took hold in Yellowstone Lake and fed on juvenile cutthroat. Gillnet boats now work the lake to pull the lake trout out. She rarely guides those upper-river fish anymore, and when she does, the cutthroat never leave the water: barbless flies, photos in the net, and an immediate release. Her measure of recovery is specific: when anglers start seeing several age classes of cutthroat in that drainage again, the population is coming back. Until then, treat every one of those fish like it matters, because it does.

Where to Fly Fish in Wyoming
- Snake River and Jackson Hole: the cutthroat heart of northwest Wyoming and home water for the Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat. Jack Braun, who came on the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast in May 2022, left his early plan of fishing bass professionally behind and now spends his free days in the Jackson Hole backcountry chasing cutthroat.
- Yellowstone National Park: most of the park sits in Wyoming and runs under National Park Service rules, not state ones. Most waters open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and close October 31, some open later, all native fish must be released unharmed, flies must be barbless and lead-free, and every lake trout caught in Yellowstone Lake must be killed. Read the 2026 Yellowstone fishing regulations before you go.
- North Platte River: tailwater stretches below the central Wyoming reservoirs, including the Grey Reef and Miracle Mile stretches, and the place to look when freestone rivers are blown out or warm.
- Green River below Fontenelle Dam: a broad tailwater running through the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in the high desert, known for big trout and very few people.
- Wind River Range and the backcountry: remote lakes and streams where you can go days without seeing another angler. That remoteness is the point and the risk, so read our Wyoming backcountry guide and tell someone where you are going.
Access is the part visitors get wrong. Wyoming Game and Fish is clear that streambeds, banks and islands can be private: you may float across private land on navigable water, but wading, bank fishing or anchoring there without permission is trespassing. Read WGFD's access and trespass guidance and use public access areas.
When to Go Fly Fishing in Wyoming
For most visitors the answer is July through September, after runoff, when freestones drop, high-country water opens up and hoppers come on. Tailwaters like the North Platte and the Green below Fontenelle Dam are the better bet in spring and fall, and they hold up when the freestones are high or warm. Inside Yellowstone, the calendar is the park's: most waters open late May and close October 31. No agency publishes a statewide hatch chart, so treat the table below as general guidance built from the park season dates and our own Wyoming trips.

Wyoming Tips from Podcast Guests
-
Research elevation and season before a Yellowstone-area trip
Fish lower elevations early and late in the season and higher water midsummer, then walk slowly to the river and watch the birds, the rises and the bugs before your first cast.
Alice Owsley, Yellowstone-area guide, on Guided EP #2 Alice Owsley -
Fish one dry fly instead of a two-fly rig
Park water is full of small seams, so a second dry drags on nearly every cast. One fly, one rising fish, one clean drift.
Alice Owsley, Yellowstone-area guide -
Overweight your nymph rig and harden the tungsten putty before you cast
On a deep tailwater, add weight until you tick bottom; if you never snag, you are drifting over the fish.
Ben Gerloff, guide and military veteran -
Downsize your streamer when big fish only follow
When big trout follow and turn away, switch to a smaller version of the same pattern and keep the retrieve that moved them.
Jake Chutz, Montana Fly Company, on Episode 33

Wyoming Fly Fishing Questions, Answered
When is the best time to fly fish Wyoming?
July through September is the most reliable window for fly fishing Wyoming, once snowmelt runoff clears and freestone rivers and high-country lakes come into shape. Tailwaters such as the North Platte and the Green River below Fontenelle Dam fish well in spring and fall too. Inside Yellowstone National Park, most waters open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and close October 31.
Do you need a Wyoming licence to fish Yellowstone National Park?
Yellowstone runs its own fishing rules. Anglers 16 and older need a Yellowstone National Park fishing permit, sold on Recreation.gov, and must follow park regulations: barbless, lead-free flies, all native fish released unharmed, and lake trout from Yellowstone Lake killed. Outside the park, on state water, you need a Wyoming Game and Fish licence.
How much is a Wyoming nonresident fishing licence?
On the current Wyoming Game and Fish application, a nonresident daily fishing licence is $14 per day and a nonresident annual licence is $102. Annual licence holders also need a $21.50 conservation stamp, which daily licence holders do not. Fees change, so confirm on the Wyoming Game and Fish website before you buy.
Can you fish through private land in Wyoming?
Only from a boat. Wyoming Game and Fish says you may float across private land on navigable water, but the streambed, banks and islands can be private, and wading, bank fishing or anchoring there without the landowner's permission is trespassing. Use public access areas, and get permission before you step out of the boat.
How do you fly fish in Wyoming wind?
Fish early. Wyoming mornings are often calm, and the best dry-fly fishing of the day can be over by the time the wind builds. Carry a slightly heavier rod than you would at home, bigger and more visible dries, and a real windproof shell, because the wind pulls heat out of you even on a mild day.
