Fly Fishing Idaho: Guides, Rivers, Seasons and Tips

Fly Fishing Idaho: Guides, Rivers, Seasons and Tips

Idaho fly fishing runs on three regions: the Henry's Fork and South Fork Snake River in the east, Silver Creek and the Big Wood River near Sun Valley, and the Clearwater drainage in the north for steelhead and cutthroat. Most Idaho water is open all year, but Harriman Ranch opens June 15.

Idaho is where I send people who want the famous water and the quiet water on one trip: a spring creek where the trout read every leader, a big tailwater full of native cutthroat, and creeks that never make a magazine list. The catch is that the rules change river by river, sometimes mile by mile.

This page is the Idaho map: where to fish, when each water opens and what our guests have said about it. For the longer take, read our Top 10 Fly Fishing Rivers and Lakes in Idaho.

The Idaho story in our archive I keep coming back to is a small one. Andy Weiner, author of the children's book Down by the River and board president of Reeling in Serenity, told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast on the episode published October 1, 2024 that he spent about nine of every ten days on two Big Wood River trips at one campground access spot near Sun Valley, catching wild rainbows on a caddis at nearly any hour. The part worth stealing came later: before another Idaho trip he phoned two local fly shops, and after a heavy snow year they told him the Big Wood would run high and sent him to the Henry's Fork instead. Call the shops first. I can back up the Big Wood myself: a dry-dropper covered every day I fished it, and the wading was easy next to the slick, bowling-ball cobble of the Madison.

Where to Fly Fish in Idaho

Henry's Fork of the Snake River

The Henry's Fork is several rivers in one. From Island Park Dam down through Box Canyon to Harriman State Park, and again from the lower park boundary to Riverside Campground, trout are catch and release with no bait and barbless hooks. The Harriman Ranch section is flat, technical dry-fly water, closed December 1 through June 14, then catch and release, fly fishing only, through November 30. Lower sections toward Ashton carry a two-trout limit with no harvest of cutthroat.

Dalton Romanowski, a Central Oregon guide who used to guide in the Yellowstone country, told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast in August 2023 that when Harriman Ranch and Box Canyon got crowded, his crew fished the nearby lakes and hit the river at dawn for the morning PMDs. An early start is the cheapest fix for pressure.

South Fork Snake River

The South Fork runs from Palisades Dam to its confluence with the Henry's Fork and is home to native Yellowstone cutthroat. Idaho Department of Fish and Game rules are built to protect them: no harvest of cutthroat, a two-brown-trout limit, and no limit at all on rainbows or rainbow-cutthroat hybrids, which compete and interbreed with the natives. Fish and Game asks anglers to keep rainbows through its angler incentive program. My best South Fork day came in a side channel too small for a drift boat, where my buddy Todd and I parked our personal pontoons and sight fished pods of cutthroat with nymphs. Read our South Fork Snake River tactics guide for more.

Silver Creek

Silver Creek near Picabo is the spring creek every Idaho angler should fish at least once. The Nature Conservancy's Silver Creek Preserve is open to the public with an electronic sign-in, and its rules are in the questions below.

Big Wood River and Sun Valley

The Big Wood flows south through Ketchum and Hailey toward Magic Reservoir. Most sections close April 1 through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and are catch and release December 1 through March 31. The stretch between the Highway 75 bridges near mileposts 122.2 and 136.2 is catch and release with barbless hooks and no bait whenever it is open. Late summer and September dry fly fishing is the reason to go.

Clearwater River and North Idaho

The Clearwater drainage is Idaho's steelhead country. Steelhead need a separate permit, and barbless hooks are required for steelhead in the Clearwater and Salmon drainages. On the upper Clearwater, the current booklet lists a January 1 to April 30 spring season and a fall season from September 10, catch and release October 15 to November 9. For cutthroat, Kelly Creek and the upper Lochsa are catch and release, barbless, no bait.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Idaho

For most trout water the answer is June through October, after spring runoff drops. Harriman Ranch opens June 15, Silver Creek Preserve and most of the Big Wood open on Memorial Day weekend, and the South Fork and much of the lower Henry's Fork are open all year. After a big snow winter, freestones like the Big Wood can run high into summer. Treat this table as general guidance built from Idaho Department of Fish and Game season dates and our guests' trips.

Idaho Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

When is the best time to fly fish Idaho?

June through October is the best time to fly fish Idaho for trout, once spring runoff drops. Harriman Ranch on the Henry's Fork opens June 15, and Silver Creek Preserve and most of the Big Wood River open on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Clearwater River steelhead fish best in fall and again from January through April.

How much is a nonresident Idaho fishing licence?

Idaho Department of Fish and Game lists a nonresident adult annual fishing licence at $108, plus a $10 access and depredation fee on annual licences. A nonresident daily licence is $22.75 for the first day and $7 for each consecutive day added at purchase. Steelhead or salmon fishing needs a separate $28.25 permit. Confirm current fees before you buy.

When does Harriman Ranch open on the Henry's Fork?

The Harriman Ranch section of the Henry's Fork, inside Harriman State Park near Island Park, opens June 15 and stays open through November 30. It is closed December 1 through June 14. During the season, Harriman Ranch trout are catch and release, fly fishing only, with barbless hooks required.

Can you keep trout on the South Fork Snake River?

Yes, but only certain trout. On the South Fork Snake River there is no harvest of cutthroat trout, the brown trout limit is two, and there is no limit on rainbow trout or rainbow-cutthroat hybrids. Idaho Department of Fish and Game encourages anglers to keep rainbows because they compete and interbreed with native Yellowstone cutthroat.

Do you need permission to fish Silver Creek Preserve?

Silver Creek Preserve near Picabo is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is open to the public, but every visitor must sign in electronically before entering. Fishing on the preserve runs from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through November 30, catch and release, fly fishing only, one barbless hook per fly. Float tubes are allowed; boats and rafts are not.
