For a ton of fly fishing anglers trout is where it starts. Some will progress and get into other species and then one day you will want to go saltwater fishing. Saltwater fly fishing is an entirely different game. The fish are absolute beasts in comparison to freshwater fish. They are powerful, ferocious eaters and will test your metal.  I’ve seen experienced anglers and beginners go to salt and the results vary greatly but don’t always align as you would think.

If you haven’t already read, Moon Phases and Their Effect on Tides, then I suggest you start there. Fly fishing often leads enthusiasts to some of the most serene and picturesque water bodies. However, for those casting their lines in tidal areas, the beauty of these environments can sometimes contradict the underlying dangers posed by tidal swings. Understanding these risks is not just about a better fly fishing experience; it's a crucial aspect of ensuring safety. I had a friend get out on an exposed island while wading up in Boston and a few minutes later, he was in a bad spot. A tidal swing occurred and there was deep water and heavy currents between him and safety.  Thankfully, he hustled and made it out but in just a few more minutes he could have been in extreme danger of drowning and if escaping extreme hypothermia.

Tides: Things That Throw Off Tides | Fly Fishing Insider Podcast

Tidal predictions are generally based on astronomical factors, primarily the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. However, several local and environmental factors can cause actual tides to differ from these predictions. The key is to understand that Tide Charts tell you predictions and they aren’t fact.  There are numerous influencers that can change and adjust tides. For example, I wrote an article on how continental masses can effect tides that you would enjoy.  This article explains several other examples that are a bit easier to observe or take into consideration.  Several of the examples are acute instance related and others are obtuse in nature.
