Why do anglers miss the target when they cast right at it?
Casting at a visual target ignores everything that happens between the landing point and the fish. A bush, a hole or a rock is a marker for where fish are likely holding, but the fly has to travel - drifting, sinking, and being pushed by current or wind - before it arrives. Aiming directly at the target means the fly reaches the fish already out of position, or lands on top of the fish and spooks it.
How far above a boulder should you cast a dry fly?
Cast a dry fly far enough above a boulder that the landing is outside the fish's window of vision, then let the fly float down into the zone. That way the fish sees the fly arrive naturally rather than seeing it drop from the sky. For a fish holding behind a boulder, the same logic applies from the side: land the fly on or beside the rock and let it drop in, rather than casting into the fish's line of sight.
Where do you cast a nymph so it reaches the fish's depth?
A nymph has to be cast well upstream of the target, because sinking takes distance as well as time.
