Fly Fishing Honduras: Guanaja, Utila, Roatan, Seasons and Tips

Location Details / Honduras

Fly Fishing Honduras: Guanaja, Utila, Roatan, Seasons and Tips

Honduras fly fishing centers on the Bay Islands: Guanaja for guided permit and bonefish flats, Utila for do-it-yourself flats and mangrove lagoons, and Roatan as the international gateway. Tarpon, snook and barracuda round out the list. March to May is the driest stretch; October to December is the wettest. Confirm license rules with your lodge.

The Bay Islands sit off the north coast of Honduras at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Three islands matter to a fly angler: Guanaja to the east, Roatan in the middle and Utila to the west. All three fall inside the Bay Islands National Marine Park, which Honduras declared on June 10, 2010.

The story we keep coming back to is a do-it-yourself one. On "How to Fly Fish and Travel When it is Your Second Priority?", published December 19, 2023, Stratton Hunter told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast about Utila, the smaller island west of Roatan. He called it a sleepy island that does not get the respect it deserves, and described a full flats menu he fished on his own: dependable bonefish on good tides, a lagoon system on the back side he crossed by rented kayak, snook and tarpon in those ponds, and another big flat past the mangroves holding bonefish and permit. He saw one other fly angler the whole time. His warning: the biting bugs are fierce, so plan your repellent like you plan your flies.

Where to Fly Fish in Honduras

Honduran flats fishing is island fishing. You pick the island first, then decide between a guided lodge week and a do-it-yourself trip.

Guanaja

Guanaja is the easternmost of the three main Bay Islands, about 50 square kilometers and roughly 12 km from Roatan. Older islanders still call it Bonacca. Hurricane Mitch destroyed most buildings on the island in October 1998 and wiped out large stands of mangrove and pine, and the forests are still regrowing. Permit and bonefish are the headline fish. Fly Fish Guanaja, the lodge listed in our episode's show notes, describes flats at the river mouth, the lagoon and the north side, ten small cays with fishable flats off the east side, bonefish averaging 4 to 7 pounds, baby tarpon, snook, jacks and triggerfish. The lodge puts wading at about 65 percent of fishing time and says the best spots need a boat.

Guanaja also has a fly tying story. Dave McKenna, owner and operator of Guideflies.com, helped build the Guanaja Fly Tyers Guild, a sustainable local workforce of tyers on the island. He told Christian Bacasa the whole story in April 2022 (episode below).

Utila

Utila is the westernmost and smallest of the three, about 45 square kilometers, and is best known as a dive island with more than 80 dive sites. For a fly angler it is the do-it-yourself option. Stratton Hunter described a small tide swing, so watch the tide chart for when water starts to push onto the flats, and look for puffs of mud where bonefish are rooting. He also likes to follow stingrays, because bonefish, snook and permit trail them to pick up what the ray stirs up.

Roatan

Roatan is the largest Bay Island, about 59 km long and under 8 km wide, and its Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) is where most visiting anglers land. The island splits into two municipalities, Roatan in the west and José Santos Guardiola in the east, where a narrow mangrove channel cuts off the easternmost quarter and Morat, Barbareta and Pigeon Cay sit offshore. Treat Roatan as your gateway.

When to Go Fly Fishing in Honduras

Weatherbase climate averages for Guanaja show April as the driest month (58 mm) and October (450 mm), November (420 mm) and December (360 mm) as the wettest. Honduras Fly Fishing Questions, Answered

Is Guanaja or Utila better for fly fishing?

Guanaja is the better pick for a guided permit and bonefish week: its lodge fishing runs to outer cays that need a boat, and guides know the tides. Utila suits a do-it-yourself angler. Stratton Hunter told the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast he found bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook on Utila on his own, crossing back-side lagoons by rented kayak.

When is the best time to fly fish the Bay Islands of Honduras?

March through May is the driest stretch, based on Guanaja rainfall averages, with April the driest month at 58 mm. October, November and December are the wettest months, each over 350 mm. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, so a fall trip needs flexible plans and good travel insurance.

Do I need a fishing license to fly fish in Honduras?

Sport fishing in Honduras falls under DIGEPESCA, the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, through its Department of Artisanal and Sport Fishing. All three main Bay Islands lie inside the Bay Islands National Marine Park. Ask your lodge or guide what license you need before you fish, and release what you catch.

Is it safe to travel to Roatan, Utila and Guanaja?

The US State Department rates Honduras Level 3, Reconsider Travel, as of August 25, 2026, and Gracias a Dios department on the mainland (La Mosquitia) is Level 4, Do Not Travel. The advisory gives the Bay Islands no separate level. The islands are also remote: on Episode 65, Mike Tayloe of Finnswest listed Guanaja among the places where his team trains guides in wilderness first aid for a slow medical response.

How do you get to Guanaja from the United States?

Most anglers fly into Roatan's Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB), which has nonstop service from several US hubs including Houston, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami, then take a regional flight to Guanaja Airport (GJA). US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less, but do need a passport valid six months past arrival and a return or onward ticket.
