Fly Fishing Missouri: Trout Parks, Rivers, Seasons and Tips
Missouri fly fishing is an Ozarks trout and smallmouth trip: four spring-fed trout parks (Bennett Spring, Montauk, Roaring River and Maramec Spring), the cold Lake Taneycomo tailwater below Table Rock Dam at Branson, Blue Ribbon spring creeks like the Current, Eleven Point and North Fork of the White, and clear rocky smallmouth streams.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) stocks more than 800,000 trout a year in the four trout parks and about 1.5 million statewide, then manages its quality water under a Blue, Red and White Ribbon system. Add native smallmouth in clear Ozark streams and one trip can cover a trout park, a tailwater and a smallmouth float. This page maps where to fish, when to go and what our guests have said.
The Missouri story in our archive that sticks belongs to Ryan Walker, founder of the Ozarks Smallmouth Alliance. On the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast episode published November 30, 2021, Walker told Christian he lives about 25 miles southwest of Springfield and that he first made his name as a midge specialist on Lake Taneycomo: really small flies, really long leaders, really fine tippet. He started the alliance after meeting a couple with four 14 to 15 inch smallmouth on stringers: by his math, close to 30 years of growth in streams where reaching 12 inches takes four to six years. Late that season, he said, a client's streamer paused on a log and a smallmouth jumped the log to eat it. They named the fly the Log Jumper.

Where to Fly Fish in Missouri
Lake Taneycomo
Lake Taneycomo runs through Branson below the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Table Rock Dam. MDC says water near the bottom of Table Rock Lake averages 48 degrees all year, and generation releases it into Taneycomo. MDC's Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery below the dam, its largest trout-rearing facility, sends about 80 percent of its trout into Taneycomo. Rules: no fishing within 760 feet below the dam; from there to Fall Creek, rainbows from 12 to 20 inches are protected and only flies and artificial lures are allowed; browns need 20 inches, one in a four-trout limit. Above the U.S. Highway 65 bridge you need a trout permit to fish for anything. Generation raises the water fast; check the release schedule before you wade.
The Four Trout Parks
Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Montauk State Park near Licking, Roaring River State Park near Cassville and Maramec Spring Park near St. James each have an MDC hatchery and are stocked daily in season. From March 1 to October 31 you need a daily trout tag ($5 adults, $3 for anglers 15 and younger, sold only at the parks) plus a fishing permit, and the limit is four trout.
Current River
The Current starts at Montauk and anchors Ozark National Scenic Riverways, which the National Park Service calls the first federally protected river system (1964). The 9 miles from the lower boundary of Montauk State Park to Cedar Grove Bridge are Blue Ribbon water (18-inch minimum, one trout, flies and artificial lures only). The 7.7 miles below are White Ribbon.
Eleven Point River
The Eleven Point was one of the eight original National Wild and Scenic Rivers, designated in 1968. From the Greer Spring Branch junction to Turner Mill Access, 5.5 miles are Blue Ribbon; the 14.2 miles below Turner Mill are White Ribbon. From Thomasville Access to the Arkansas line, smallmouth carry a 15-inch minimum and only one may be kept.
North Fork of the White River
MDC manages 8.6 miles from the upper outlet of Rainbow Spring to Patrick Bridge as Blue Ribbon water, then 7 miles from Patrick Bridge to Norfork Lake as a Red Ribbon area where all lures are allowed (15-inch minimum, two trout). Arkansas guide Steve Dally told the podcast the Norfork tailwater below Norfork Dam takes its name from this river, which he called a beautiful little stream.
Meramec River and More Spring Creeks
The Meramec, closest to St. Louis, is Red Ribbon trout water from the Highway 8 bridge to Scott's Ford (15-inch minimum, two trout, flies and artificial lures). Other Blue Ribbon creeks include Crane Creek, Mill Creek and Blue Springs Creek.
Ozark Smallmouth Streams
Walker described Ozark smallmouth streams as clear water over rock and gravel, with wood as secondary cover. MDC sets 15-inch smallmouth areas on parts of the Gasconade, Jacks Fork, Elk, Meramec and Eleven Point. In most streams south of the Missouri River, black bass are catch and release from March 1 through the Friday before the fourth Saturday in May.
When to Go Fly Fishing in Missouri
Missouri trout water is spring fed or dam fed, so it fishes all year; the calendar mostly decides crowds and rules. Treat this table as general guidance built from MDC rules and our guests' comments, not hatch data.

Missouri Fly Fishing Questions, Answered
How much is a nonresident Missouri fishing license?
MDC's 2026 prices put a nonresident annual fishing permit at $57 and a daily permit at $9. To keep trout outside the parks you also need a trout permit: $24 for nonresidents, $12 for residents. In the trout parks from March 1 to October 31, buy a daily trout tag instead: $5 for adults and $3 for anglers 15 and younger.
When is the best time to fly fish Missouri?
Missouri trout water fishes all year because it is spring fed or released cold from Table Rock Dam, though spring and fall are the most comfortable. The trout parks are busiest March 1 through October 31. Smallmouth peak from June through October, after the spring catch-and-release period in most Ozark streams ends.
What do Blue, Red and White Ribbon trout areas mean?
They are MDC's trout tiers. Blue Ribbon water has an 18-inch minimum, a one-trout limit and flies and artificial lures only. Red Ribbon water has a 15-inch minimum and a two-trout limit, with lure rules that vary by stream. White Ribbon water allows four trout and all lures, with no length limit on rainbows and a 15-inch minimum on browns.
Can you fly fish the Missouri trout parks in winter?
Yes. MDC lists the 2026-2027 catch-and-release season from November 13, 2026 to February 8, 2027 at Bennett Spring, open Fridays through Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., flies only. Montauk and Roaring River run the same Friday-through-Monday program. You need an annual trout permit instead of a daily tag, plus a fishing permit.
Is Lake Taneycomo good for fly fishing?
Yes, if you plan around the dam. Taneycomo gets most of the trout from MDC's largest hatchery, and from below Table Rock Dam to Fall Creek it is flies and artificial lures only, with rainbows from 12 to 20 inches protected. Ryan Walker built his early guiding reputation there on tiny midges.
Is Missouri smallmouth fishing worth a trip?
For a fly angler who likes streamers and topwater, yes. Ryan Walker told the podcast a 20-inch smallmouth is a big fish in Missouri streams, likely 13 to 16 years old. Stream bass under 12 inches must be released, some special areas set 15 inches, and he asks anglers to think hard before keeping big ones.
